Default Zoom H5 test

Wow, a bit more clarity...

J-45, Zoom H5:

And here's a short recording with the same guitar, but with my former recording setup:

J-45, Tascam US-122, MXL 990 left mic, right mic AKG Perception 150:

So now I have to get fluent in ZoomSpeak, (menu wise)

Sounds good, but how come you're using two different mics for your other setup? Isn't there a timbre mismatch there.

Hey Barry, perhaps it's just my cheap laptop speakers but I prefer the tone in the 2nd recording.

Maybe because I'm playing and palm muting, etc. and the test is, well just a raw test. I can hear a big difference on my Logitech PC speaker system.

A few people do this, they will have a large condensor and a pen condensor. I was getting a better result with this pair instead of my Rodes NT-5 and the AKG.

The Zoom is a matched pair though

sounds good Barry! The clarity you mention to my ears is in part due to much less background noise with the Zoom when compared to the other recording set-up. It makes a significant difference. I think the internal pre-amps on the newer models have improved a lot over the years.

Those are two large condensors though, right? I use two of the same model AKG's if I want a stereo pair and it works for me.

Both recordings sound great. The 2nd one is more "airy" sounding. Levels must be different between the two?

Play the same piece and record the same performance with the two devices. That would be a better comparison, IMO.

I'll have to do that.

The second one was recorded with my old setup has that problem you mentioned - an "airy" sound to it which has driven me nuts for quite a while. I'm thinking now that its something with the Tascam I have. It used to be a lot worse, but I stopped using the phantom power of the Tascam and put a Presonus BlueTube into the recording chain and this made the recordings a lot better.

The Zoom H5 gives me a recording that sounds just like the recordings of some of my favorite professional players. I just have to learn more about the recording routine of the Zoom.
