This is a great idea. I have to admit it crossed my mind when I read the latest stolen guitar thread as I have my first custom on order and I would hate to lose it. Is there some sort of small tracking device that can be hidden inside a case or the actual guitar?

Default Great Idea....

I was the recent victim that posted the other day. I can say as a freshly violated human being that this has come to mind often in the last few days. This thought definitely follows my strong desire to wring the neck of soul-less thieves that walked away with my hard earned collection. I'm going to check out the link shown in the reply above and will reiterate the suggestion when I follow up on my post in the next few minutes.

The way I feel right now, I'm beginning to think Exploding guitars may appropriate under certain circumstances.

Anyone remember the exploding attache case that 007 carried in "From Russia With Love?" Maybe you could have a guitar case that explodes if you don't open it correctly.

still not technologically feasible.

People dont seem to understand the way GPS works. Even if you do get a power supply inside the case to power the electronics of the GPS receiver, all you have is a guitar that knows where it is.

You still need a transmitter and some means to connect to a network service to communicate this.

Laptops have had this feature for a long time.

Mike: big difference between the 2 devices. The $289 one does not rely on other users being nearby. Therefore you can track it no matter where it is located.

Virtually all the wireless carriers offer these services under the product heading of "asset tracking". Used mostly for industrial or institutional equipment but it is a very small device attached to anything that you can look on a map and see it location within a few feet.

Not very expensive per item but some restrictions may limit sales to consumer customers. Check with your wireless carrier to see if its available on a consumer basis.

If it’s irreplaceable, keep it secured. Otherwise insure it and forget about the worry.

Interesting idea but personally I don't have any guitars that are " irreplaceable" Family and pets are the only irreplaceables in my life.
