Default NGD - 2005 Martin D15 - Two big questions

I made a good trade to land a very well cared for D15. It is simply a cannon. I am super impressed with the volume it is capable of, not to mention that sweet round all hog tone. I played everything from old Bluegrass to fingerpicking ballads and do not want to put it down.

Two questions;

Do all-solid hog guitars open up like spruce topped guitars?

Why do some say the all hog guitars are limited to jazz and blues? All types of music sound good on it when I do my part. Please educate me.

Do spruce-tops open up? If so, it's probably a humidity effect. Mahogany is more stable than spruce in terms of hygroscopic changes.

To me, mahogany tops give a warm, woody, simple, fundamental tone. Comfort food. Like blues.

You are educated. My D15 does it all. It is not as loud as a D-28 if you are blue-grassing, but that's not my deal anyways. I love the D15s.

Oh, and Mahogany tops "tale longer" to open up than other top woods. Having said this mine has sounded great right out of the box, and if its sound has changed over time, I can't tell.

Congrats,

If its an '05, it has pretty much opened up in my experience. Once gits have 5 or so years on them to me, at least with my Martins, they have settled in pretty good. Then they just slowly get better with the years..........

I think that a guitar's opening-up has more to do with its construction than the wood itself.
Many great instruments are built with wood that has already been aged but still can open-up.
I think it has mainly to do with the guitar itself settling-in or becomming more "loose". Thats why there are devices like the tonerite.

Now all of this needs to be taken with a grain of salt and you shgould always assume that a guitar will not open up. It isnt a great idea to buy a guitar you arent crazy about with hopes that it'll open up.
And there's always the possibility that a great sounding new guitar might sound worse after opening-up.
Whether or not guitars even open-up at all is debateable but assuming that they do, it would be dangerous to assume that it would always be an improvement.

Default My new D15

I am extremely pleased with the D15s sound. I have been considering a hog topped GS Mini and am curious if the hog topped version will open like the spruce would.
