Whatzit?
I usually ignore the old cheapie vintage guitars, but this one is listed near me and piqued my curiosity.
Looks kind of like the old Kay archtops, but it's a 12-fret slot-head with cut-away and no F-holes. Birch maybe? Any ideas what it is? Was this a popular model?

I can't tell you what it is but it is indeed interesting.

It could be a Framus, a Hoyer, something along those lines. It does appear to be birch on the top. which raises another possibility, that it's an old Finnish-made Landola. They built a lot with birch. I don't think it's North American and doubt that it's Asian-made. It looks European, whatever it is. Wade Hampton Miller |

Oh, really? I don't think so. Maybe they're being built in the Netherlands now (I don't know for certain,) but they were built in Germany for at least the first thirty or forty years of the brand's existence.
The brand name has recently been revived by Warwick, which is a German company, and the web domain for the Framus brand has a ".de"suffix, which also indicates Germany. So - so far as I know - I stand by what I wrote about Framus being German. Wade Hampton Miller PS: I still don't know who made the guitar in question, or where, but I also stand by what I wrote about its appearance being similar to many unquestionably German-made instruments. I hope that's a little clearer. Last edited by Wade Hampton; 04-21-2010 at 11:27 AM. |
