Compressor anyone?
Anyone here use/used a compressor in their electric guitar chain? What brands do you like? What kind of music do you use it for.
I've never had a compressor before but never thought I needed one. |

The most transparent one out there to my ears is the Barber Tone Press. It uses parallel compression to hide the "pop" at the beginning of the note. For slide I've been looking at the Origin Effects Slide Rig. If you want the pop at the head of the note you can look at the classic MXR Dynacomp.

I've had a Drawmer DL241 since the early 90s. I bought the thing for recording. Anyway, I've never actually used it with electric guitar. I've always used it when recording vocals and fbass. Sometimes I've used a touch of it on acoustic guitar. I could see using it with electric for certain clean arpeggiations or maybe some funk work, but I haven't.

...i used a Keeley two knob for years and then decided i needed a break from compressors and for last 4 or 5 years had not used one on my board...until recently...i got the compressor bug again and after researching options bought a Wampler EGO compressor....man i love this unit...its so much more usable than any other compressor i've tried....its super clean and clear and has the ability to act as the best clean boost i've used on account of a blend control....it plays nice with all of the other pedals on my board...i play all manner of styles but its really nice for giving me some punch when i'm looking for old school jazz tone and of course it shines when you play country (or alt country in my case)....there are a couple of great vids on it (including a Brent Mason one where he's kinda sketched out)....

My only experience with comps has been my Boss, and I like it a lot. It's the only pedal on my board that's always on.
I've found, though, that it's easy to overdo it when it comes to comps. When I first got it, I became too enamored of the long sustain and consequently started to sound like a Carlos Santana wannabe, without the chops of a Carlos Santana. What works best for me is to add just enough compression to fatten my tone, and stop there. |

I use 2. First is a HBE CPR and second a Janglebox JB2. The HBE CPR can be found used for $120 or so and they are really great.

I use a Humphrey Audio-modified Boss compressor in pretty much an "always-on" fashion in my signal chain when I'm using my Fenders, on relatively low settings with a relatively high attack. It's quite transparent and doesn't jump out and smack you in the face as being a compressed tone, but it just "juices up" the single coils a bit. Gives them more sustain and a touch more fullness, and still works with touch-responsive tube amps.

I use a Keeley 2 knob compressor. It is an "always on" effect for me, but I use it more as a mid-boost than as a pure compressor. That is the thing about "Ross style" compressors (the category I put the Keeley in). They are not transparent, but that is the point of these sort of compressors.

Country music:
Tele, compressor, slap back reverb. Compressor is essential for good chicken pickin! Gives you that pop. Boss works well for most. |

Dru - I use a MarkBass Compressore and it sounds great. You might want check one out. I haven't tried it yet with an electric guitar, but I've heard it does well there too.

I bought a Boss CS-3 many years ago and decided I just didn't like it. It was too noisy and seemed to only really have a good sound with the Attack set down to almost off. I never really could figure out a good setting on it so it went out of my chain for years. Then I decided to try it again and did a Monte Allums mod on it and that really made a world of difference, it's much more quite now.
I find that in live settings it's one of my best effects. It's almost always on except if I use my envelope filter, it tends to even that out too much. But it's a almost like having a Presence effect, hard to explain. I like it. Having said that when I'm just practicing around alone I rarely use it. I don't know why. I think the Presence affect it has works well live as it seems to sort of punch through the sounds of all the other instruments, presence. |
