Why light gauge strings on a CA Cargo ?
I understand that every guitar maker chooses the strings gauge that makes a certain model of guitar sound better.
Is this the reason why CA puts light gauge strings on a cargo ? Does the Cargo sound worst with medium strings ? Because otherwise I do not understand the reason of putting light strings on a 22.5 scale guitar, making the strings very floppy. Cam some forum member who tried both gauges on a cargo give his opinion ? Thanks ! |

I think the stock Cargo strings are "standard" 12-53s (so, yeah, medium lights). I haven't tried heavier strings, but really suspect the Cargo is "engineeringly" VOICED for that particular string tension. The reason is that I tried tuning it a step up to F-sharp. My thought was it would basically be like a standard guitar with a second fret capo--which would be cool and I figured there was string tension to spare.
Well it changed the sound of the guitar significantly to my ears. It wasn't an awful sound, but it was NOT an improvement IMO. However, when I just capoed it in standard, the sound was unchanged. . . just a step higher. For me, the best approach to the floppier strings was to just get used to it (not hard to do) and then enjoy whatever benefits there are from low string tension. |

Put the medium set on and they sound fine. Now I am worried I may cause damage....lol....anyone else using thicker strings than lights on their Cargo?

Almost any guitar will sound better with heavier strings. You are driving the top harder with the extra tension and vibration energy. Your fingers may suffer a bit, but the tone will likely be noticeably better.

Actually, I am not sure that most guitars sounds better with heavier strings. I read somewhere that heavy gauge strings can prevent the top to vibrate freely and therefore the tone could be worst. I do not know if this is the case of the Cargo, but for sure I do not see any other reason to put light strings on a 22.75 scale guitar. It would be like putting extra extra lights (10-48) on a 25 inches scale guitar....
