For me it was also one from the Rocky Mountain High album- "Season Suite: Late Winter, Early Spring (When Everybody Goes To Mexico)". Just beautiful!

I knew I wanted to play guitar. Once I got a guitar, the first song I decided to learn was Knockin' on Heaven's Door. FOrtunately, by sheer blind luck, it was a very easy song to learn to strum along, so I got almost instant positive reinforcement.

Default the song

Interesting replies - I have heard of almost none of those songs. But then I never cared much for electric guitars and popular music.

In '60, I attended a summer church camp where the kids sang folk songs for fun. 2 played guitar and 30 joined in. I never knew singing could be fun before and resolved to teach myself guitar so I could contribute without having to sing too loud. And I learned a lot of folk songs in the process.

I love that song! It took me a while but I was able to learn the lead part.

Three songs combined, made me want to "do that".

Crazy On You - Heart
Black Betty - Ram Jam
Daytripper - the Beatles

Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown," maybe?

That was a long time ago. Still play that album every once in a while.

Classical Gas. No songs ever made me want to play a guitar. They made me want to sing. CG made me want to play and that's what I did within the first year of picking up the guitar. Then I embarked upon a quest to write my own melodies. Songs and singing along with them were a distant curiosity because instrumentals were a measure of my skills, not songs. I still assert that.

Probably something by the ramones. It's what I loved in high school and wanted to play. Thankfully it was all power chords.

I can't point to one in particular, but I do have a very vivid memory of Glen Campbell doing "Gentle on My Mind" with John Hartford every week on his TV show. I was around 11 or 12 at the time. I really loved that song, but I've never even considered learning it, not sure why.

Played in the school bands (woodwinds) growing up, but never knew any guitar players until I got to college. They got me started, and one of the tunes I wanted to learn was "Deal" by Jerry Garcia. It had an F and B7 (played in the key of G) so it took a bit of diligence to get it down. After an extend break I started up semi-seriously again about 10 years ago. I still play "Deal" frequently, in a couple of different keys.

It was Iron Maiden's dual guitar harmonies that made me pick up the guitar back in the '80s. If I had to pick a specific song it would have been Aces High.
