Within the sarcasm of that whole story is a message about hypocrisy.
One of my all-time favorite comedians was the extremely vulgar and hard-partying Sam Kinnison. Sam was a fire-and-brimstone evangelical minister. He was a real preacher as was his father. A lot of his jokes were very acerbic comments on hypocrisy and many folks did not understand that. As far as I know, he never lost his faith, just his tolerance for hypocrisy. Thank link reminded me of him.
