Although I am partial to Anderson 'T' Classics, I would suggest checking one out.

If you ARE looking for a copy of a Telecaster, Tom Anderson's T is pretty hard to beat! But as much as that guitar might be considered the "ultimate" "tele", it still ain't a Fender Telecaster!!

Even though I don't play it much...I do keep my tele ready just in case and don't see myself ever needing another electric.

I liked the James Burton Standard. No, not the MIA one with the Lace Sensors. (I happen to like women way too much to own *that* guitar. ) I'm talking about the red one with the two "Texas-Tele" pickups. That bridge pickup is sweet.

the changes in fretboard radius and pickups are considerable over a standard model tele non-fender "tele"? i'd try looking here prices are very reasonable for a true custom

A lot of good suggestions - especially G&L in that price range. I liked playing the '52 reissue that the other guitar player in the band had for a while. Nice guitar.
HereIgoAgain - great post. Agree with you Anderson's are great guitars. The build quality is superb and if you order the right woods/pickups - ect. you can get the ultimate tele tone. Now a huge fan of stainless steel frets - no noticeable difference in tone - no wear and very fast. Although my Hollow-T-Classic with maple neck/alder body is tonally closer to a traditional tele - my new one which is personalized maple quilt top on basswood is ...... well.....pictures forthcoming !! |

Thanks LP. I had the priviledge a few years ago of noodling around on a pro's Anderson. (It's one of the tele-looking things, but short-scale and two humbuckers.) All I could think, aside from "He's actually letting me play this thing" was "Wow." Before his Tom, he switched around with about 15 different guitars. Now he uses his Tom, an SG, and an Ibanze RG (when I needs the Floyd, I guess).

That would be a Cobra - tele body/shorter scale neck - usually maple on mahogany.....they rock...........anyone who wants a hybrid Tele/Les Paul sound should seriously consider an Anderson Cobra.

Cobra's are great guitars but the Anderson Atom is even better.

Here's a pic of my '62 RI Tele Custom in sunburst. I have two Tele's (this one and my 1972). I'm actually thinking of selling this one as I don't really need two. Both of them rawk!

Tele reccomendation
I agree. The 52 re-issue is the way to go. I had a Custom shop Nocaster, but didn't like it, and got rid of it. The 52's I've tried sound good even without being plugged in, which I have used as a halmark on all electrics.

You could try Gordon-Smith. Based in Manchester, England, they're very cheap, and pretty basic. But they are the workhorses of a hell of a lot of pros over here; they don't do much, but what they do, they do brilliantly. And seeing as the make all guitars from scratch in the workshop, extras are very cheap. Want to bring your own pickups/bridge? Want a particular paint? Scalloped fretboard? Different scale length? It'll be either very little or no extra cost.
They also do one-piece maple necks- no skunk stripe or fretboard glued over. Which... I dunno how they do that. They also play and sound great, with all humbuckers coil-tapped as standard, and brass nuts on thier cheapest models (about £400, which would transpire to be about $900 shipped to america, I reckon). Their teles are from £587 though. Keep an open mind about the finish, I know it's odd on the site, but seeing as you can specify whatever the hell you like, I wouldn't worry about it.
