Personally, I would go with an Alvarez Masterworks.

Which one? Most are mahogany tops, which isn't my preference. Prefer Spruce or Cedar. Something sparkly and bright.

Agree that the Guild 140 series (hog-like wood) needs to be on the list. The one's I have tried have all been pretty good, and a couple were very good. I see them listing new for $750 sometimes.

The 150 series (rosewood) are offered right around $1k.

Agreed, my most played guitar is an Alvarez MDA66SHB, all-solid African hog dread. Smart looking, tight fitting clean build, rich and resonant. Considering it comes with an Alvarez badged case, a street price of $599.99 seems like a good value.

EDIT: I just see now you don't prefer a hop top on your guitars. I don't see it in current production, but I've seen a number of used Alvarez MD-60, MD65 or MD-65ce models for sale, often in like new or very good condition. The 60s are Sitka over mahogany and the 65s are cedar over mahogany. Prices seem good. Also, I see MF sometimes sells the MD-70 (sitka over rosewood) at discounts. Good luck in your search.

At just under $1000 I'd be looking for a Larrivee L03 or an Eastman.

Yes they are; the 16 series and up (26, 36, 56), have all solid construction. Only the 6 models have laminated back and sides.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Yamaha A3R, AC3R, A3M, AC3M, LL-TA, LS-TA, and LL16R D.

If you go to the Alvarez site, I think you'll find most are + spruce or ++ spruce tops.

I have a masterworks model MD60 which has an AA Sitka spruce top and solid Mahogany back and sides. The MDA70 has an AA Sitka spruce top and solid Rosewood back and sides.

I'd look for one of these:

Or, better yet, try to catch a sale on one of these beauties:

Better pics of both here:

Check out the great ziricote back on the middle one.

I'm going to be the devil's advocate and suggest that in the lower price ranges, you might be better off with laminated b&s. Solid isn't automatically better, and there is timber quality to be considered. My favourite guitar for fingerpicking is all-laminate, top, back and sides. You have to trust your senses, not specs.
