Default ToneDexter firmware upgrade V1.30 available

I know some of you have been waiting for this! We've just released V1.30 firmware. See our Firmware Downloads page to get the files and instructions for updating your box. The new user guide is available on our Documents page. The ability to get WaveMaps in and out of the box is almost but not quite ready, so we decided to release what we have now, and come back asap with V1.40 which will add the WaveMap exchange feature.

Version 1.30 released Jan 12, 2018

Feature Enhancements:
· Blend control. For newly created WaveMaps, character adjustments CH2, CH1, and CH0 are accessible in the right half of CHARACTER knob rotation. When operating in the left half of its rotation, the control allows blending 0% to 70% of the raw pickup signal with 100% to 30% of the WaveMap. The raw pickup signal is polarity and time aligned with the WaveMap so that no comb filtering or weirdness occurs. For existing (legacy) WaveMaps, the blend control works as before with CH0, CH1, CH2 spanning the full rotation range.

· High (HGH) version code now designed for multi-instrumentalists. High bank slots 12-22 use EQ and notch params tailored for mandolin, violin, banjo, etc: low shelf starts at 250Hz, high shelf at 2KHz, notch range is 124 (B2) to 466 (A#4). Low bank slots 1-11 function the same a general (GEN) code: low shelf starts at 125Hz, high shelf at 2KHz, notch range is 73 (D2) to 392 (G4).

· Bass (BAS) version tuner sensitivity greatly improved.

· Level matching algorithm improved for better loudness match between WaveMaps and bypass.

· Paste and Delete function completions now return the user to RUN mode, rather than MUTE/TUNE/EDIT mode. This seems more user friendly and is easier to explain.

Bug Fixes:
· When boost knob adjusted, boost gain did not change until next BOOST activation

· When training with slot 22 (which skips feedback corrections), there was an unintended 3dB drop in level at FREEZE transition.

· Under rare conditions, WaveMap select control could be out of sync (off by one) with knob detent position.

· Under rare conditions, when using feedback notch, it was possible to get into an in-between condition that caused the temporary display to continually retrigger.

· When entering FREEZE mode during training, if CH0 or CH1 selected, extra clicking noise occurred.

Known Issues:
· Turning the CHARACTER knob too fast causes the temp display to show a value that doesn’t reflect the actual setting. It has no impact on sound.

· Under some conditions turning the CHARACTER causes an unintended very brief temporary display of Bxx. It has no impact on sound.

· Turning the CHARACTER knob while in MUTE/TUNE mode causes an unintended temporary display of “CH2” upon returning to RUN mode, no matter what the actual CHARACTER mode is. It has no impact on sound.

Nice addition to the Blend control, will make it even more versatile.

Looking forward to 1.40 and ability to move WaveMaps from one ToneDexter to another.

Downloading...

The blend control alone is enough to get me excited. There are times where I would like to dial the wavemap back just a bit. This will definitely up the versatility. Great improvements!

i like the enhancement to the HGH version.
i play guitar and mandolin and will now
have greater versatility with the lower bank
on guitar and the higher bank on mando.
James how soon for the release of 1.4.??
Can i skip 1.3 and go direct to 1.4?
thanks again for a great product.

We're working hard on the V1.40 release, but no date yet. Soon as possible.

As for skipping versions, yes you can. No need to worry about sequence, you can freely jump from any version to any other version.

Default Pre eq

Hi, new here,

Watching the comments on tonedexter closely. If the character control can now be used to blend, in my case would putting an eq before tonedexter to tame the low end and mids from a k & k lead to a more effective blend if wave map and pickup. I am very interested in this ground breaking piece of kit!

Yes, in theory it would, if you really need to blend in the raw K&K pickup which tends to be overly bottom heavy. In practice, you probably won't need the blend at all with a K&K.

We added this feature mostly for upright bass where it is more difficult to properly mic the meat (fundamental low notes) of the instrument and hence have them show up evenly represented in the WaveMap.

One thing I've started doing is, rather than training directly with ToneDexter, recording the pickup and mic to my DAW, then feeding that into TD for training. I originally starting doing that with the idea that I could repeat the training process reliably, and possibly pre-process the mic signal to try to influence the training if needed (only marginally successful).

But with this latest release, I realize it has another benefit - as the release upgrades that affect only new wavemaps - or if they make improvements to the process, I can more easily retrain with the exact same inputs So in the case of 1.30, I should be able to recreate the same wavemaps I have now, but with the new character feature applied.

i too have thought about using something
to "Unraw" the pickup in the training process.
can a pre such as the felix be used to tweak
the signal going into the Td while training.
as long as my input signal stays out of the red?

The DAW is a great idea. The training process for me
has to have some structure to be reliable/repeatable.
My first attempt was a bit lax. i made a bunch
of wavemaps with different mic positions.then i played
out and found one that sounded good live. But i don't
know what mic position that was. So on my second pass
i have it all written down. The daw idea is great. and accomplishes
the right "scientific method " required to maintain sanity during this process.
i will still have to write it all down.(no DAW) but will eventually come up with
one or two maps i like live for each of the instruments i play.
Good thing i enjoy doing this...ha
