My heart goes out to you AmericanEagle. I have been in somewhat the same situation. Many of my friends have, too. As a minister, some of my toughest assignments have been with the loved ones affected by this disease. While a diagnosis of cancer is not the death sentence it once seemed to be, it is always difficult, for patients and loved ones alike. Praying now for everyone affected by your friends situation.

Sorry for your loss, OP. I can relate, as I have lost a close friend, this year, and my only brother 5 years ago, to cancer.

As to the "war": we are spending enormous sums of money and research on the disease and fatality rates have fallen, overall. It's progress, but the casualties are unavoidable.

It seems to be an incredibly complex thing to understand. Or maybe there are so many varieties that it's hard to make progress on all those fronts.

War is probably only thing that causes more heartache and grief than cancer. It's killed dear friends, and ruined the lives of many good people. Both my partner and I are cancer survivors, at least, so far? It's just been a couple of years for me... It takes five years to be officially "cured" Even that doesn't mean that you won't develop it later...

I don't see any better chance of eliminating cancer than the common cold. There just seems to be too many variations of cancer to eradicate the disease, like what's been accomplished with smallpox, or polio?

I suspect as we live longer there'll only be more variations of cancer to suffer from? Medical treatment has certainly improved. People live a lot longer with most types of cancer now than they did 30 years ago, which can be a mixed blessing frequently.....

All we can do is live our lives to the fullest, and make every minute count, enjoying the pleasures of life while we've got it, because - This sure ain't no dress rehearsal!

Don

There is definitely a progress, but it happens incrementally and on per-type basis. I have lymphoma. 10 years ago, my particular variety was described in literature “most patients eventually die of their disease”. But newer methods have improved the prognosis significantly.

The appearance that more people get cancer today is largely because other diseases are pushed back and we live longer.

There will come a time when cancer will be a difficult but manageable disease.

It is quite interesting. We pour billions, if not trillions, into research but we have YET to find a cure. And is it me or has the rate of cancer diagnoses gone up over the years? I hate cancer. It hit me close when my former coworker's son got leukemia...he's only 3 years old or so. It's terrible!

I was about 15 when one of my close friend's younger brother died from leukemia. He was either 12 or 13, I don't remember. I remember his mother and father and my friend being totally devastated. I hope the 3 year old fares better.

Eagle, so sorry to hear of your loss...........this disease is a beast. My daughter has come through cancer (somewhere, stage 2/3, never knew exactly) and passed the 5 year mark. She was 35 when she went through it. Other members including my mother died from it......
We are (my wife more so) fund raisers for the Dana Farber/Jimmy Fund Walk and get to meet the "big guns" in their medical group each year. Their message and work is inspiring.
Best wishes in the days ahead, my condolences.
