Unhappy Stupid cancer

How I loathe this disease!

On December 23, 1971, President Nixon declared a "War on Cancer"
Are we winning this war?

I sit here brokenhearted as I see another family member about to perish from this horrible disease.
It has stolen from me many loved ones.
I am afraid to even think about who may be next.

One of my dearest friends died last week from colon cancer... I’m not much of a conspiracy theorist but you would have thought with as much money as we have poured into research to fight it that it would be a distant memory by now.

Except life, genes and biology does not conform to the norms of behaving science.

I believe that much of this "epidemic" if created by our lifestyle choices and our damage to the environment in which we live.

Organisms have ways of defending themselves. For example, as CFC's depleted the ozone layer, more UV light got through, this made the weather more turbulent, which created more upper atmosphere lightning storms which generate O3 which replenish the ozone layer.

Under normal circumstances, the ecosystem can keep itself "in balance" but we have overloaded that self-regulating balance.

I think a very, very long time form now if our planet is ever studied it will be determined that mankind died off and the planet healed itself.

Directed, planned or coincidental I think these things are the world's way of fighting us off because we have become the infection on this organism.

I wholeheartedly agree!

My sympathies as well for your imminent loss. It’s tough.
They don’t call it “The Emperor of Maladies” for nothing.
It is a sinister and malicious disease, a formidable foe that recognizes neither wealth nor social echelons.

I am sorry to read of your loss

Cancer has taken every male member of my Dad's family. Cancer took both my parents. It is sad to watch someone you love go through it. It consumes virtually every minute of your day, as it takes their life away. Nothing more important than spending time with them, trying to put a smile on your loved ones face, and making them feel comfortable, taking their mind off it, and trying to ease their pain. Stay strong and focused, as you need to be there for your family.

I'm sorry for your loss AE.

Life itself is an oddity. We're all lucky to be here in the first place.

Sorry for your loss, I think Cancer has touched all of our lives in one way or another. Personally I feel the GMO foods are killing us. It was much rarer in the 60&70's.

Huh?

Rarer, only because there were fewer people living in the 60s and 70s than now.

To settle the argument, you need to look at the percentage of cancer deaths per 100,000 persons.

Since 1970, overall deaths from cancer (per 100,000) have decreased 11 percent in men, and 6 percent in women--based on statistics available from 2006.

Peak year for cancer deaths--per 100,000--was 1990, by the way (and cancer deaths have been on the decline ever since)--long before the first introduced GMO in 1994.

Therefore, based on that statistic alone, one could actually conclude that GMOs have contributed to the decline in cancer deaths.

Addendum: From 1991 to 2014, the overall cancer death rate dropped 25%.

While I no reason to doubt your conclusion, I am always reminded of the quote from Robert Pirsig

“For every fact there is an infinity of hypotheses. ”
