Unfortunately, in snow country out-swing can be problematic.

Yes, agreed if one does't have a porch or sufficient roof overhang.
Perhaps a whip and a chair ?

Indeed, the problem with out-swing is substantial. Cabin when I arrived on Feb 25 of this year. Front door is in there somewhere.

Digging commences...

A good hour later...

It then snowed 3 feet over the next 36 hours. Good times. The door in question is above, the bears smashed through the window area because the storm door got crushed and we didn't replace it in time to stop the bears. Lesson learned I guess, but not sure why they never just busted through the storm door.

Yeah it's odd. 50 years that cabin has been there w/o incident and same door configuration. Bears around all the time.

I wouldn't be letting that neighbor in my house again!

Hi Dirk. I am curious , have you figured out why the bear wanted in? Did you accidently leave any food or garbage out that it may have smelled? I know when camping we were taught to hand food and garbage from a branch and not leave it in tents or even cars.

No, we weren't around and we take out the garbage when we leave. It's a relatively populated area, people live there. There's always food in the fridge and in cupboards at every house. I guess it was a combo of us not having been around in a while and bears getting really hungry late in the fall. Break-ins happen there all the time. We have some friends, an elderly couple who had a break-in when they were asleep, at home! Just our turn, and we installed a new storm door as well, so that should help.
