Default 5 star recommendation - Planet Earth/Planet Earth 2 !!

I recently upgrade my HT, last call for "retirement", to the latest audio/video specs/gear, (4K HDR, Dolby Atmos/Auro 3D/DTS:X), and wanted a reference quality 4K Blu Ray HDR DVD to see what my system could do.

Bought a few 4K HDR movies (King Arthur is surprisingly good IMHO) but kept hearing you have to buy Planet Earth, from pretty much everybody who has a 4K setup, and the folks who sold me my gear said it was "unbelievable", and the Youtube stream is not the same.

Had folks over for dinner last night, put in Planet Earth 2 after dinner, and jaws dropped, including mine, just bought it hours before.

Amazing cinematography, best picture I have ever seen even over broadcast 4K, it's a memorable experience about our amazing planet !~!~!

If you have/get a 4K HDR television and 4K HDR Blu Ray player (the OPPO 203 that everybody recommended is well worth the money), get Planet Earth/Planet Earth 2, amazing, inspirational, informative....wonderful...

when you've finished Planet Earth be sure to move on to Blue Planet/Blue Planet II (currently showing over here on BBC).

This takes you on and under the sea to depths rarely explored. This highlights the lack of imagination of the Sci Fi creators. When they invent aliens they always seem to have two arms, legs, eyes and ears etc just like us yet there is a vast array of true aliens living on this planet with us.

Also amazes me how creatures in such a dark environment are always the ones with the most vivid colouring.

Yup, I've had it a few months on my OLED. It's amazing. I'm missing Atmos but have 7.1.

Another one that's good is "Chasing Coral" on Netflix believe it or not. It uses Dolby Vision which is a little better than HDR. If you have Netflix and a Dolby Vision TV, check it out.

I don't think Blue Planet is available in 4k, HDR yet though.

We have throughly enjoyed the Planet Earth series. If you enjoy cinematography and have never seen Samsara it is visually stunning as well.

I have it on Bluray for a few years and it's great. However, Planet Earth II is a whole other level on 4k, HDR.

Should be great, from the creators of "Baraka" another visually arresting film

I have been contemplating a HT upgrade also...probably replace my older Samsung plasma and original Oppo Blu Ray with new LG OLED and a new Oppo 4k UHD blue ray player

Definitely get an OLED. They're beyond amazing.

The Hunt looks pretty sick on Netflix HDR.

And you get Sir David Attenborough to boot!

Try his "Life in the Undergrowth" for some really fantastic small scale big pictures.

Yes I have checked them out at Best Buy a couple of times
Also don't if you use Blue Ray ? but Oppo was and still is one of if not the best values in top shelf audiophile grade components and specs in a mid level price point, the base unit is $549 .
My current Oppo player is one of the original offerings and is still really good, but does not have 4k UHD, HDR, or Dolby vision or wifi for upgrades, which the new one does

Do your home work, OLED does suffer image retention. If you are not someone who plants on a favorite channel (with a logo) it may not be a problem, but it can happen and there are disappointment stories on Youtube.

In general I would not argue OLED is the way to go, but there is one exception, the Sony Z9Ds. Just as it isn't fair to compare a $500 guitar to a $5000 guitar, it isn't fair to compare a low end LED to a pricey OLED.

Currently Sony has priced it's 65" OLED (A1E) and top end Bravia LED (Z9D) at the same price, because they are comparable, even to Sony. The OLED does true black and has better off axis viewing, the Z9D does HDR (color) better and is the brightest television on the market, both are amazing.

If you're shopping OLED (65" or higher), do an A/B with a Z9D (which start at 65"), let your eyes decide. The LG/Sony OLEDs are wonderful, but a 75" Z9D followed me home............

Edit - 5 stars on the OPPO 203, you really can see the visual improvement over lesser players.

Interesting and thanks for the heads up, although I honestly don't understand what (" If you are not someone who plants on a favorite channel (with a logo)" means ?
But I will make a point to check out the Sony Z9D
And I am looking at 55 only that's it, nothing larger

My Plasma suffered image retention, being retired I leave my set on while working around the house. If you leave a Plasma or OLED on the same channel for extended periods ("planted"), Fox, CNN, MSNBC, ESPN, etc., their logos can "burn in" leaving a ghost image.

We're talking many hours over time, but it's a known problem and "image retention" is not covered by warranty. Plasmas were around look enough there are a lot of articles about burn-in, and now some early OLED adapters have reported the same. My Best Buy salesperson showed me floor sample OLEDs with image retention, that they periodically removed/replaced so as not to hurt sales, but again this only applies to hours a day on a favorite channel over time, not a problem for most folks but something to be aware of.

The Z9D's start at 65", so not on your radar. Aside from 4K, look for HDR which many base models don't have. HDR is High Dynamic Range which is a much broader and vivid color palatte/contrast, you can see the difference side by side.

FYI - some Best Buy prices for 55" 4K HDR televisions:

Sony A1E - OLED, $2800
Sony 930E - $1700, LED, their best 55" LED, Z9Ds start at 65"
LG E7P - $3000, their best 55" OLED

Again, the less expensive versions of the above do not have HDR, do an A/B and you'll see the difference. Hope this helps, I did a LOT of research on TVs, receivers, and 4K blu ray players before I bit the bullet........
