Bridge pin slots of my guitar are not vertical. Opinions please..
Since two weeks I own an all solid wood Yamaha LL16 guitar that I choose at my local store for great tone, action, playability and, also, beautiful look ! Yesterday I was replacing the strings and I noticed for the first time that the six bridge slots for the bridge pins are cut slightly at an angle, so that when I insert the six pins back, they sit slightly tilted to the right (photos attached). ...should I be concerned ?
Your opinion is welcome, thanks ! |

No need for concern. Just enjoy your guitar and play a lot!

No I don't think so - I think thats normal.
They come in different sizes and angles (3 degrees, 5 degrees etc) though, so you might want to check with yamaha if they sell replacements as to what they used. Here's a link to a list of different manufacturers and what size they use: http://www.guitarpartsandmore.com/?nav=pins. Awhile back I was looking for pins for my Gibson from 1990 and became aware that they make pins in different sizes/angles while looking for a replacement. Just as an FYI you can get wood reamers in degrees from Sweetwater to widen the holes if you need to - I did for a Johnson guitar, they work very well. Lawd lawdy, Harriet

The taper of a pin is not related to whether the hole was drilled on a tilt.
At any rate, Listen to Frank Ford. His expertise in things like this is can't be beat. |

Yes the problem is not in the pins. Actually, the original ones were plastic, the ones in the photos are bone, and both pins (plastic and bone) look a bit tilted when inserted. So it is a matter of how the six bridge holes were drilled. I am so glad to be reassured by Mr. Frank Ford whom I trust 100% ! Because before posting this thread I sent the pictures to Yamaha USA and they told me that the angle was not normal at all and recommended that I returned the guitar to the store and exchange it....but I'd like to avoid it, because I love THIS specific guitar, it sounded better than others of the same kind ! Thank you all for your kind opinions ! As Mr. Ford said, I will enjoy the guitar and try to play a lot ! :-)

Must have been a splinter of wood under the bridge wing when it went into the drill press.
Old Guild guitars are drilled on a back angle. |
