Default New neck day

Bought a new maple neck for my Strat project, the last one was too narrow and thin. This one came with a bone nut, abalone dot inlays, and nicely dressed medium jumbo frets. I think I am going to have to level the frets some- they seem a tad tall, getting some buzzing. Can I just use steel wool?

Steel wool to polish. But leveling and crowning is more involved.

Stewmac has some nice crowning files with concave cutting edges...once you get them leveled with a straight edge you can follow up with steel wool to polish (actually I prefer bronze wool as it doesn't leave any residue that can rust), or even a Dremel with a rag wheel and some automotive valve polishing compound. I always mask the frets when doing stuff like this, BTW.

I did a similar thing with one of my strats...it was cheaper to replace the neck than it was to refret; I put on a Mighty-Mite neck with an ebony fingerboard...cost me about $80 bucks, plus the cost of Shaller locking tuners and the time & material for a teflon trem nut.

BTW, I like that combination of the anodized pickguard against the burst...very old-school. My MIM P-Bass has the exact same combination and it looks like a brother to yours.
