Default Finally here! NGD 2017 Martin D-28 w/pics

As some of you know the action on this beauty was so high I took it straight to my tech after it arrived yesterday to get the setup done...so I’m a little late with the NGD post. Just got it back this morning and wow! What a difference. He lowered the saddle, worked on the nut slots, adjusted the relief and installed the bone bridge pins with MOP inlays and a matching end pin that I got from Bob C.

Plays like butter and looks gorgeous.

First thing you notice is that this “update” is still very much a D-28. That signature, banjo-busting sound that explodes with those lush rosewood overtones. Very responsive. A bit brighter then I remembered my previous D-28 being, which I like. And there is still plenty of low-end. Truly a great partner for my warm and woody D-18.

And did I mention it’s gorgeous! The open-back tuners, faux tortoise pickguard, the oversized MOP fretboard dots (which go great with my Colosi pins)...and, yes, I’m slowly coming around to even liking the aged toner.

Also, gotta give a shout out to Maury. He picked the guitar up at the factory, inspected it, then shipped it to me the same day. Always have had great CS from him...but this time was over the top.

All in all, at this point I couldn’t be happier...which is why I’m heading back to play it some more right now.

Meanwhile, enjoy the pics:

Big Congrats! You might be the first on the AGF to post a NGD of the new version D-28. The woods on yours look great too. These are going to sell like hotcakes given the new specs.

Enjoy your new Martin.

Very nice, Enjoy. (I don't do congratulations; that's reserved for new babies and university graduations!).

Looks terrific. I love straight-grained rosewood. Glad it performs so well. What puzzles me is -- why one earth is a major setup job necessary on an expensive new Martin? I'm sure the resulting playability is really nice, but why did you have to incur that cost and bother? Working on nut slots on a newMartin? Yeesh! But at least it came out great.

Every Martin dread I’ve owned came with high, bluegrassy action. Which is fine because many (most?) folks want that kind of action in a Martin dread...and for those of us who don’t (I like low action and play light strings) it’s much easier to lower action than raise it.

So I have no complaints. Getting a new guitar setup is standard for me...and this one only cost $25.

Congrats! Love the back on that guitar! Although it bugs me when there is no 3 fret inlay lol.

That does look great! I suspect the brightness you are hearing is just stiff wood. Give it a couple weeks. My D18 was brighter a few weeks ago than it is now.

When you get time, please do a comparison with the D-18. Obvious tonal differences aside, I'm interested to see which you think is more responsive and bolder. Would like to know if you can tell a difference in the bracing...
