Banjo case
I am going to need a case for my banjo when it comes in. The banjo is a Deering Goodtime 17 fret tenor banjo. One thing to keep in mind that is an open back banjo. thanks for any help.

I am leaning toward getting the Deering gig bag. While I would prefer a hard case, From what I have been reading it seems most Hard cases don't fit the open back banjo's that well.

You can get - or make - a pad to take up the extra depth of the resonator that you won't have. Gold Tone's case for their banjola is a regular banjo case that comes with a matching 1" thick pad.

TKL makes a hard-shell case (#8938-11) for non-resonator tenor banjo, in both tweed and black Tolex - these guys seem to be the only ones who stock them:

I recommend against the Deering gig bag. It looks nice but I never liked the functionality of it.

The banjo is $489 I would like to get a good case but I would like to keep the cost aound $100 I can't believe some of the prices that i have seen for banjo cases. They are not cheap.

As I suggested in your other thread a 17-fret openback tenor is more a specialty instrument, far enough out of the mainstream that TKL and Gold Tone are the only outfits making a quality case - and the TKL is the cheaper of the two; if you're OK with a gig bag (I'm not - YMMV) one of these might work:
http://www.jdmc.com/product/C-267P.html If you're in a large metropolitan area and/or near a good string-instrument store (or two), you might also check their bargain bins for a serviceable used/factory-second/new-old-stock case. I managed to score a brand-new Deering hardshell case ($220 MSRP) for my D-6 6-string banjo at no cost from my semi-local Sam Ash, when I wasn't too happy with what they offered me in trade - and if they didn't do the deal with me they'd still be sitting on it in 2027; if you've got a good eye, a nose for bargains, and a talent for haggling this might be a good way to go...

Maybe check out some of the cases Clareen are offering, since they deal in tenor banjos.
I've been badgering Hiscox to make a banjo case for a while but they say it's still a ways off. |

And where he might consider getting his next banjo.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am actually looking to order tonight or tomorrow.
I actually ordered the banjo I did blind without the opportunity to play one. One thing is for sure I will learn on it and as far next banjo we will see after I play on this one for a while. |

Tenor banjo's are very old school and very cool ( ive got a very old one from the early 1900's )- Instrument Alley treated me well on a classical i bought many years ago - call around sometimes you get lucky on a used case .
