Both of the woods I mentioned were used to treat malaria which is a precursor to Black water fever, they both were used for Quinine which is used for Malaria. And cinchona was definitely used for malaria treatment. So I guess I give up...

"The bark of Cornus (Dogwood) species is rich in tannins and has been used in traditional medicine as a substitute for quinine"

Gallberries also...

Not a bad guess. Locals sometimes call it that because the sap is dark red. That might be its pterocarpus lineage. So to stretch a point you could be in line for the prize.
