Default A second thought

Consider this...

Mike "may" have suggested the top with compression grain because it rang particularly beautifully and was what he thought was best to achieve your sonic goals. Compression wood is typically a bit denser and often stiffer than normal spruce. As long as Mike properly was going to properly thin it, it can make superior-sounding guitar if handled properly.

The top you chose is aesthetically pleasing (and may also ring beautifully), but I might ask myself why would Mike suggest the one that he first proposed to you? Why did he suggest them over the white piece that you chose? Luthier's tend to get excited over density to stiffness ratio, or how a it flexes or rings when tapped over the "AAA" aesthetic criteria that many players sometimes focus their attention on.

Food for Thought...

Edited for clarity

he didn't really suggest one over the other, just sent me the links to all the blue spruce tops he had. He only has about ten tops left, and hand selected those from the supplier.

The top you chose may indeed be the perfect top for your guitar. I was merely bringing up some reasons behind why Mike may have selected the top with compression grain in the first place from his supplier.

Looking forward to watching your build...

A sound clip would require me to be able to play in front of others, so let me get a Rx for Xanax first

Congrats! I'm sure that you'll be delighted!

It's about time to get in line with Mike again. Time to make a visit (he's about 5 miles away from me!) What I have in mind is a bit of a combination of the two that I have, with a scale change:
Cedar/Cocobolo or perhaps Malaysian blackwood
Meridian
24.75ish-24.5ish scale
1 13/16 neck

Just had another drool over the cocobolo photos....that is beautiful wood! Would love to see this one and John's (Cocobolo Kid) together; that would be unbelievable!

Thanks for the build thread.

No no no. You just record alone in your basement with dimmed lights and everything will be fine.

Go for it, one can never have too many Baraniks Jenn! I am looking forward to the shorter scale on my OOm next year.

I just strayed in here ... I never heard the term "compression grain" previously.

From the shots , I can see what you are referring to. Thanks, I'm always learning something new on this forum.

I have an Adirondack-topped Martin which displays a lot of this, what I'd call "flame", quite distinct from "bearclaw".
