Amplification
Hello everyone,
I just purchase here in argentina an acoustic electric guitar, I have no amp yet, and it will be awhile before I can purchase one. In the mean time I plugged the guitar behind my Sony home theatre stereo amp, CD rca plug. The problem I have is that I have to put the volume all the way up in the guitar and also the stereo to hear it. Is there a way to put some gain in the guitar output, like a preamp, to give more signal to the amp stereo. What do I do, Thank you all! |

Someone will soon come on here and explain why, but they are not meant to play together. Maybe the solution is a powered A/V DI box like the one Radial makes. That's the extent of my knowledge on this and that may not even be accurate.

If there is a Microphone input to your stereo, that would be a better place to plug it in. Most of the RCA plugs on the back require more signal to drive them, a pre-amp would work there, but a microphone input would be closer to what you are trying to achieve.

I would not use my stereo for my guitar amp. I would be afraid it would blow my speakers if I added even more preamp power. Just a thought.

If your stereo has a phono input, try that. It was designed to accept a lower level signal.
You could also purchase a headphone preamp and use it as an interface to the stereo to go into the CD input. HOWEVER, DO NOT USE A PREAMP WITH THE PHONO INPUT, ONLY THE CD INPUT. Using it into the phono input would overload it. There are many multi effects boxes like the Digitech RP series, (used pricing for the cheapest one around $30 bucks) that have headphone out jacks that you could use to practice while listening through headphones, plus it has effects and you could even send that signal to the CD input of your stereo.
