Tom....this build is "lights out" phenomenal!
One question for you if you'd care to comment. I see in this build what I've heard called a "flying back brace"....and of course my Legacy has this bracing as well. On other guitars I see you use Lattice bracing.......
What goes into the decision to use one or the other for your builds with the back braces? If the answer is too proprietary, no need to respond....just interested in what creates one approach over the other. Or, you could PM me back channel.
thanks for the great pics and effort with this instrument!
Fred

OMG this is pretty much the guitar I want built for me. Tom, sometime in the somewhat near future, I'm gonna pull the trigger. Can't wait.

So, Tom, made any progress on this? Would love to see some new pictures! What else are you bringing to the show?

I spent quite a few hours over the weekend playing my Doerr and it was sublime. Gorgeous tone and effortless playability. There's magic in Tom's guitars.

Fred the reason for the floating braces on the back is the hold the 12' radius of the back going with the grain. Structurally it helps the back to hold its radius over time. I also like the fact it couples all the braces together in hopes to feel the guitar better as your playing it. Many people do it these days and far as I know it's based off of what Jeff Traugott has been doing for awhile. The only reason why I did two braces left and right of center is so you can see my label.

I have made some progress. I'm at the point in the building process which I call the ugly phase. Until the binding are cleaned up and the neck carved there's really nothing picture worthy. Although I will put a couple pics of the headplates and neck. I should have some pics of the body in the coming days.

Well if everything goes well (I still have a ton to do) I will be bringing at least 4 guitars possibly 5. They will all be Brazilian mostly old growth but some stumpwood. I will have 3 Legacy Select models all with Swiss spruce. The 5th one if I become a hermit in my shop for the next 4 weeks I would like to do a Trinity Select model fan fret. Still deciding on Adi or Swiss for the top. We shall see what happens. Wish me luck

Tom, thanks for the info and background on the back bracing.....nice to learn a few of those "tidbits" on the "why" and "how" of your building.
A fan fret Trinity.....wow......will be watching for that one!
Best always,
Fred
oh, by the way.....good luck with this final project for the show!

That's gorgeous. Can't wait to see that Brazilian under finish! I know people love stump wood, but there's something undeniably great about well quartered old growth wood. Can't wait to see that one in person!

Thanks for the comments everyone! Just completed the finish on the guitar yesterday. Building the guitar is one thing but applying a good finish is another art in itself. To me getting a great finish on the guitar is one of the most satisfying aspect of guitarmaking. Here's a couple of pics. Thanks for looking!

Congrats, Tom! Beautiful as always...........Looking back at the pics, I especially appreciate the very nice work you've done with the heel of the guitar. Once again, you've taken a somewhat standard appointment and carved a beautiful Tom Doerr elegance into that area. It's just so classy and understated, but totally "there" for the eye to appreciate.
Great going, Tom!
