Default Fishman Acoustic Matrix Natural I Preamp

I have a 15 year old J45 with this installed. Any good or should I look to replace it, unable to test it out on a gig with a band at this point?

They are a fine pickup, the choice of many pros over the years.

I used those pickups for years in both my 6 and 12 string guitars... they work just fine. Although the preamp is not adjustable, the signal it puts out is plenty strong and has a great tone as well... I never had a problem getting a great sound from it no matter what system I was using for a PA...

I play solo, acoustic guitar and voice. I found that putting an SM57 on the soundhole (6-10" away) was a great way to give the pickup a little "breath" and string noise, neither of which seem to be reproduced by a UST-type pickup. I never turned the mic up very loud at all...

If you have one of those Matrix pickups and it's in fine working order, you're good to go. I'm assuming you don't play "plugged in" very often... if that's so, then putting some different unit in the guitar would really be a waste of money.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Get yourself a spectrum aura di/preamp and you will have a great live sound.

if it's working, just leave it. The Fishman in my 812ce is original to it (1995) & works fine. Just change the battery every 6 months or so & that's all you have to think about with those.

I had this system in my Guild D35 for some years and the only reason I changed it was due to damage to the UST (my fault). Mine is/was the older model where the pickup is soldered to the end pin preamp, the later (current?) model has screw binding posts. If you decide to keep it be careful not to damage the grounding-film covering the UST (for example, if doing work on the saddle, trust me I know from experience...) as even a small scratch will cause serious grounding hum...

As others have said, it is a decent system, easy to use and sounds ok - not the best but far from the worst. It works well with the Aura systems and providing you don't need hundreds of presets you can get a very good mic-like sound with the simpler Aura systems without spending a fortune.

I did find mine needed a bit of compression to tame the quack when strummed hard but that isn't unusual.
