My understanding is not often. There's an archtop at Gruhn (1979) made by John David Morse, who later worked for Santa Cruz:
http://www.gruhn.com/inventory/ar419...-santa-cruz-ca And Carmel Music had this 17" Santa Cruz archtop: http://www.carmelmusic.com/gallery/s...uz_FJZ17_F.jpg Those are the only two that I can remember seeing in the past, although I did just find this third photo of one: http://retailupmusic.com/shop/produc...r=27967&priv=0 I imagine you could contact them and they may make one for you if the price was right. I also imagine that price would be out of my range though!

I've heard they are pretty rare. I wonder how many they have made all total. I remember seeing a brand new one a few years back at Sylvan Music. I would imagine they would be pretty killer.

Really?
I prefer more abbreviated pickguards myself, but I don't think the one on that Santa Cruz is too bad. Not as bad as, say, this. |

Jerry Garcia had one, pictured on some of the disks he produced with David Grisman.
These are even more scarce than Bill Collings archtops and would most likely command a very high price.

If you really want one you should call the factory. There has been a real nice maple body with a faceted top and a beautiful recurve floating around the office for a while. It is/was in the white waiting for someones custom neck specs. Worth a try.

Total of 22 Archtops according to Mr Hoover. One in the shop right now.
Dan Roberts may have made a few when he was shop foreman.
