Default Kalikimaka indeed

I've been wondering how I would get my fingers warm enough to cut a video of "Mele Kalikimaka" and decided to check out the one I did back in 2010. When I visited that old one I realized the clip I shot back then was too cute to try to replace - those were the days when we had an occasional pet sitting job in Kailua so we were in Hawai`i for Christmas and there was a lot of fun stuff to cut into the video. We've got Hawaiian Christmas decorations, parties with friends, an evening at an authentic imu - the traditional earthen oven where dozens of folks brought their pork shoulders, turkeys, hams and more to be buried under layers of coals, rocks, ti leaves, banana stalks and leaves, and burlap.

Those were early days for my equipment so I was still recording audio on a Zoom H2 and using a Q3HD and a little Lumix pocket camera for video. The guitar back then was an Epiphone EF-500RCCE.

So Mele Kalikimaka to you ...

Fran

That’s a great job with a wonderful melody, Fran!

My only prior exposure to this song was on Jimmy Buffett’s Christmas island record. I went back and found out Bing Crosby had a hit with it. So thanks for that, too!

Merry Christmas!!

Glad you enjoyed it, Glenn, it was fun to see how much the video and audio have been upgraded - less than I would have thought actually. especially looking at the price tags and specs.

Mahalo, Rick. When I dove head first into slack key I thought about what my role might be. I'm not carrying on a family tradition, nor am I adding much to the genre, but I decided I would try to spread an appreciation for the style. So your comment makes my day.

Aloha, Bob. I never caught Parrot Head fever so I missed the Buffett version until searching around this year. Really interesting to hear JB vs Bing vs Don Ho - such variation in phrasing and even melody choices.

Thanks, Paul. It's a cute little melody that lays out pretty nicely on the guitar.

Probably the best selling version, Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters:

This guy wrote it, along with dozens of other English language Hawaiian songs:

A lot of people heard Jimmy Buffett do it:

Don Ho had to get in there, of course:

And you can find many more on YouTube.

The Hawaiian Islands this year are having interesting weather. Rain storms an flooding throughout the state. Huge waves on the north shore of the big island and and an inbound airliner ran into severe turbulence with several passengers and crew suffering injuries, some hospitalized. Still it is a special time. It doesn't get much better than Christmas island style. Aloha Fran.
