Thanks for all the great input folks. Really appreciate the willingness to help me understand the options and the considerations. My family's ears are still bleeding but I'm making good progress.

And Wish You Were Here is awesome, IMO. I would think that song would be a great "first song to sound recognizable" for just about any beginner. |

Gosh thanks Greg, and yes, I'll take that as a compliment.

Hi,
If it fits, it fits! If it sounds right, what's the problem? I've been playing a variation of C (332010) for years, where my pinkie sits on the G of the E string. It’s easier than not playing the E string. To me it sounds great, but our other guitarist in the band (whose left handed!) complains that when he looks to see what I'm playing, he thinks it's an F and it puts him off. But then he always needs a bit of reassurance when we're playing! I've always thought that the great guitarist's of the world always have their own versions of chords and that's what made them great. Pushing the boundaries! If you wanna play your version of G, go ahead, you're on your way to guitar superstardom!!!!! Rgds Dawpooldad |

My point, however, is that you only need to fret the strings that you are playing. It's like the Jazz/American songbook material with more complex chords many of which have three or four notes but also "killed" notes.

I find it a very handy way to free up my index and middle fingers while playing fingerstyle. Just have to be careful not to use the A string unless you want it.
Sounds great for strumming, too, but make sure to mute the A string with your ring finger. |

If you make G with fingers 2-3-4, it put your hand in position to slide right into C or E. I've only been doing this for a month but I saw it yesterday morning.
Much better. |

I feel like a knucklehead but new to the guitar and the forum. Ring finger is the thumb? |

No, think of the finger you would have a ring on if you were married, next door neighbour to your little finger :-)

I was traveling and kept trying to emulate it in the air and when I got I got out the guitar and no problem. It must have been the beer talking. Thanks!! |
