Default Testing the concept

So, this is the original idea for the 7 piece neck. Somehow it didn't work for me.

So, I ditched the center maple section, and subbed in an Australian blackwood piece which works very nicely with the koa trim.
Of course the maple veneers had to trade places with the mahog.

A little naphtha to see the final color and I like this much better.

Smile Neck heel.

Must mention how much I like John's super low and wide neck heel! Put that together with a 12 fret cutaway neck, and you have almost as much upper fret access as a "normal" 14 fret neck. Plus you get the fat 12 fret tone! Of course he does other heels, but this one is my fave.

This neck will have no truss rod and a lot of carbon fiber for rigidity. We are going for the least amount of weight we can get and still have major comfort. John has been very accommodating to say the least!

Cool beans! Lucky me!!!

Cheers

Paul

Default More neck work

I embedded 4 carbon fiber rods in the neck. The central two are in the Chanel where an adjustable truss rod traditionally goes. I left those two sticking out about 1/16 of an inch in an effort to get them as deep as possible since the bending strength is proportional to the square of the depth. I will plow a 1/16 groove in the bottom of the fingerboard to fit over these central rods.
The outer two rods are 3/8ths inch thick and flush with the gluing plane. Any thicker and there is a risk of uncovering them when carving the back of the neck. I learned this the way i learn most of my lessons.

You can see the fingerboard extension platform. It will float over the top and I wanted it to be really thin, for looks mainly. I feel sure it will be quite strong enough with all the carbon fiber running through it from the main part of the neck.

Peghead is veneered in Honduran Rosewood burl.

Smile Fab headstock for sure

Wow John.

You are outdoing yourself. I love the burl on the same shape HS of 128, but this is super pretty in these pics! I am sure it will be set off nicely by the burl in the top purfling, too!

Getting closer!

Cheers

Paul

Default Side markers

There will be paua diamonds on the face of he fretboard but Paul wanted something quite visible on the side of the neck. These purfling bound rectangles of the same burl as found in the trim around the top and the peghead penetrate the fretboard binding and are visible from the side and top.

A little naphtha on the project shows the contrast. What may not be apparent is how the purfling lines around the rectangles match up with the purfling lines of the fingerboard.

Smile Looks sweet to me!

This is great as I sometimes tune open for slide and will daringly play lap slide with the LOW action I love and need for standard playing. Takes a very light touch!

With these side markers visible from the top, too, I can find my way around much easier on lap slide. Plus they are nice on dark stages, too!

John came up with a similar idea for the markers on my other custom build. Now I miss them on all my other guitars! I can use all the help I can get! Hahahahaha

Thanks John!

Cheers and a fine Sunday to all!

Paul

Paul, I love those side markers! The first time I saw those used on a guitar some years ago, I wanted some on one of my guitars. Now, I find myself wanting some again...

See what you did???...got me "GASing again" You AND John are guilty as charged!! ha!

Glad you guys like that. Mitering the purfling around those little pieces of burl was not easy.

By the way, I do have a treatment for GAS
