I think the first lesson a metronome has to offer is "listening".

It amazes me every time; I set the tempo, get my foot tapping, start to play and six or eight measures in I'm no longer listening to the 'nome, and instead I'm letting my foot tap drive the beat and my fingers push the accelerator.

It takes me some severely focused attention and several false starts before I can HEAR the 'nome while I play.

A bunch of years ago, I bought a vibrating metronome that straps onto my ankle. I found the vibration was distracting and went back to the audible beat. I have an app that offers a variety of drum tones to vary the 'nome and that helps.

Last week at guitar camp, there was the suggestion to make my own backing rhythm tracks to make practice more interesting. I plan to do that - and have the metronome working for me as well.

...and the beat goes on....

I've really found that foot tapping is a learned art. When I first started, I was just tapping my with with the music. Getting my foot steady and then getting my playing to follow my foot was a great leap forward.

I use the gnome everytime I practice.
If I don't hear the click, I don't feel
like I'm practicing.

I find using the left foot a lot more difficult than my right foot. Do you think learning to tap on your less dominant foot is beneficial? I can see how it would interfere less when sitting, that's for sure.

I've noticed my right foot tapping is easier now I'm practising with the nome. I used to find it very hard to tap my foot along unless it was in sync with downstroke or bass note (if playing fingerstyle).

One good trick I like to do is to practice tapping heal, toe, heal, toe, In order to simulate having a metronome marking only the two and four.

As long as the tempo isn't very fast, this should be pretty easy and natural. I find it gets student's playing to feel much better almost instantly, with that little lilt you get in the groove. 🎸
