Personally, I doubt that the existence of a volute makes any difference. In most instances, the break occurs underneath the volute, and the extra inflexibilty of the volute may actually increase the chances of a break.
If you are serious about increasing strength without grafting on a separate peghead, I recommend a bent overlay that extends down past the nut (like some vintage banjos):



This will bridge the area where most breaks occur. The violin style volute (like on a Gibson banjo) is a most attactive design, but adding an overlay that is bent to fit the surface has the same problem as the volute itself....no strength increase where it is needed.

This is IMHO the most pleasing design aesthetically. But the typical break is below the overlay, where the grain is shortest and the stress the greatest.
