Drop D Tuning and Slide
I am slightly confused. I am planning to start messing around with slide playing and watched a few videos. It seems to be popular to drop D your guitar which I understood it as DADGAD (from 6 to 1). Then in this guys video sounds like he tunes string 3 (G) to a F# and then the last two after I replayed it still not hearing him right or he messed up what he said.
Also when I Google Drop D seems like the most common answer I get is: DADGBE So which is it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjhY...F3C3&index=162

On Drop D, only the 6 string changes (the low one). Sometimes you'll see Double Drop D when both Es go to Ds, but DADGAD is yet another tuning.

Isn't DADGAD popular with Celtic Music?

Yes, indeed! And it's a great tuning. Double Drop D with the B-string down to an A. There are many wonderful fingerstyle tunes in DADGAD and not just Celtic.

Here's a teaser by Al Petteway about playing the blues in DADGAD. He did an album, class at Swannanoa and instructional DVD on it. Great fun. |

Most of the slide players I know, play in standard tuning, open G (DGDGBD), open D (DADF#AD), or open E (EBEG#BE). On an acoustic guitar, that last one will add quite a bit of tension, so take that into account.

And while you're in open D, if you want to learn some slide from one of the best, Steve James is the man.
Great playing and a lot of slide wisdom to pick up. |
