There is a pair for sale and I'm interested to see if anyone has used these for acoustic guitar recording.

If you're getting a pair of them for guitar recording, make sure its a matched set - for the price you should get them this way (the mics are also sold individually). A new matched pair goes for $1600 from Sweetwater.

Neumann does not match microphones for their stereo sets such as the SKM184. Neumann says their tolerances are so tight that they don't need to.

A good used pair of KM184 will record acoustic guitar quite well.

I agree, I recently went on vacation to Montauk NY where I'm from, to chill out, and to write and record some new songs. I packed a pair KM184s, a Neumann M147 (a very much hated microphone), a RME Babyface, and my laptop, and I recorded a bunch of good acoustic tracks with these mics! I was surprised at how good (1) KM184 and a Neumann M147 blended together sounded. They seem fill in what each other mic lacks. Used Neumann M147s can be had CHEAP because of their terrible rep. If they weren't so expensive new I feel many people would find a good use for them.

I recorded the KM184s in X/Y and they sounded great.

The Neumann KM84 was one of two small-diaphragm mics, the other being the AKG C451E, that dominated the acoustic guitar recording market in the '70s and '80s. Both have been re-engineered for the modern age by their manufacturers and are living a new life. Both are very nice sounding mics and can be used to good effect for guitar. In both cases he epicurean folks maintain that the high-end is more brash on the new versions. I did test recordings with the classic versions on one side and the new ones on the other and presented them to my colleagues at the studio. We didn't see it as more brash, but as more modern sounding.

Wow great info guys!

The only good mics I have currently are AKG 414 and a Sennhiser 421. They are not bad and have decent results, but I'm considering KM184 used matching pair for about $1000.

Hmm, a pair of km 184.

They're sort of unrealistically bright. Not that you can't fix some of that in the mix, but…

Regards,

Ty Ford
