Not sure about it being a throw-away scene. I think one of the movie's themes was the dichotomy between taking and protecting lives. In his role as a predator hunter, he did just that. Renner's character protected the lives of livestock by taking the lives of predators. However, he frets that he hadn't adequately protected his daughter, and seemingly his marriage came apart because of that. The parents of the girl who was victimized show their loss in different ways, semi-denial for the father and self-wounding for the mother. However, Renner's role as predator hunter changes during the film. When he looks into the lions' den, he doesn't see predators; instead he sees a family and spares them while continuing his search for the human predators...

I really liked the movie. IMO, Jeremy Renner is turning out to be a fine actor; he seems to get better and better.

Very well done but I noticed some people here saw it with it their wives.

................er, in general, I don't think it would be a good date movie.

Women wouldn't like a mystery with a female co-lead? I'm not married, but if I was, I would refrain from telling my wife "you wouldn't like it because...."

I saw it with my wife last night.
Not a good date movie.
But, we liked it, but found it disturbing/sad, and very intense, and realistic.

Definitely not an accent thing, I just couldn't understand a lot of their speech.
"What did he say?" stuff.
It didn't ruin the picture though, the story was still clear.

I saw 'Dunkirk' in the exact same cinema a couple of days later and the dialogue was perfect, so it definitely wasn't the venue.
In general I absolutely cannot hear actors/actresses when they whisper. Especially when it is related to a major event/story line in the plot.
