Well, as the tuners wear, backlash develops. Someone must've figured out that if the post/worm pulled toward the worm gear, that would remove or at least minimize lash. Though even if there was lash, as long as you're tuning up, the lash is taken up by the tension of the string, and the tuning remains somewhat stable because a worm will not back-drive. It just makes it a lot harder to tune back down to pitch, as you have to below, then back up.
