I can't help with specifics, but when someone says "strumming", I immediately think of Gibson J200s and square-shouldered dreads like the Hummingbird. - So I would be looking guitars similar to those..

Top of your budget:
Taylor 310
Martin D-15
Gibson J-15

Middle of your budget:
Taylor 110
Martin DRS1

Bottom of your budget:
Yamaha FG800

All really nice guitars — for the money, I’ve been particularly impressed by the new Yamaha. It can hang with guitars costing 3-4 times as much.

Also, I highly recommend you visit Wildwood Guitars. Looks like they’re just 30-40 minutes outside Denver. Their photography and sheer selection online is amazing, so I can only imagine what visiting in person is like.

Great list below from ataylor!
I'll add four all-mahogany dreads, one at the top of the budget, and three at the bottom (in bold):

I'm a Martin guy, but some of the Mexican made Taylor's are great and really affordable.

Strummers I have played in your price range:
Eastman OM's ...I have an E6 Ltd... great strummer.
Eastman E10 OO...yes it works
Eastman Dreads... any. You can buy an E 10D or a 20 in your price range. E6 or E8's are less
Martin D15
Gibson J15
Taylor 114e ...great guitar for the money. Tough to beat at $599

I picked up a Seagull Maritime Solid Wood series that is $999 Canadian. I thought it was amazing.

The Martin Custom D classic is on sale at M. Friend right now for 880 bucks. I have owned one of these and it is a great sounding guitar. If you don't like it you can send it back.

I second the Larrivee L-03, although you might need to buy one used for that price. A new Larrivee L-02 would be in the ball park. Both are great strummers.
See an L-03 in the following video:

Nothing beats my 1999 Gibson J45 Rosewood. I have had 50 plus acoustics and this one will never leave. I would stick with 12" radius 1.72" nut width, 2 3/16" or 2 1/8" guitars for strumming. Martins 16" radius is too flat for me. Although the Martin tone is great and hence the Gibson rosewood model.

There's a Martin D15 sunburst on here for sale for 1100 by a member that looks great and is cheaper then what you'd find in a store.
I currently play and Alvarez MD90 that was around 700 new 15years ago and a littleness less than that used on eBay now. For the price I don't think my Alvarez can b beat but for a $1000 u should b able to get or come close to a D15 or J15. No clue on Taylor's

Default D-15

If you decide to go with a D-15 I have one I am considering selling. I don't do well with dreads anymore...neck, shoulder issues.
