Default "Magnolia" by Martin Tallstrom

After several days of hard work, I finally managed to record my version of "Magnolia", a beautiful ballad composed by the immensely talented Martin Tallstrom.

I slightly modified the introduction (replacing the percussive bits with filling notes) and I also play this piece a bit faster than the original (which is rather unusual for me) but otherwise I tried to stick to the original as much as possible.

Here's my rendition of "Magnolia" on my 2012 Olson SJ "The Tree":

Thanks for listening.

Lovely rendition of a lovely tune. Tallstrom is a really fine musician.

Can you describe the signal chain and also the specifics of mic placement (camera angles make that hard to see)?

Your hard work paid off Mau! Beautiful rendition, I'll take notes over tapping any day. Just lovely!

Thanks Jon.

I still use the same old iPad as in my very first videos. Nowadays it's connected to an Apogee Duet. I also ditched GarageBand in favour of Auria.

Microphones are pretty much in the "classic" position. The left microphone (TLM 103) is pointed at the neck joint while the right microphone (AT 3035) is pointed at the bridge. My guitar is about one foot away from the mics, possibly even closer. Depends on the guitar and the kind of attack required for the tune. I usually move around until I hear the sound that I want in my headphones.

Thanks, Curt.

To be honest, I only avoided the tapping because I didn't want to "abuse" my guitar...

Just wonderful, Mau!! Man, quick movements on that fret board......clean, crisp, and right on the money. Stunning.
Love the song, love your version......thanks for sharing that! Your "several days of hard work" have paid off handsomely!

Beautifully done, Mau. I wouldn't want to "abuse" that guitar either.

Hey Pisan,

I know I'm a bit goofy most times but may I say in all seriousness that this brilliant rendition of yours truly reflects the unique artist you've become. While your playing has always been executed flawlessly while coaxing incredible tone from beautiful instruments, it has taken on it's own signature that is unmistakenly you. As I've listened to you and your music over the past few years, I believe it has matured into a style that is unique and ranks among some of the best and my favs in the genre of Antione Dufour & Lance Allen.

Well done Mau

eric

Maul that was really well done. I listened twice, and will listen again many times. Never heard the original artist, but your's will suffice for now...

Thanks so much, Fred. For days if not weeks that piece was an obsession for me. It was both fun and challenging to learn. I will keep it in my repertoire from now on.
