Default Help with Ryan Adams "Oh My Sweet Valentine"

Have been trying to figure out this Ryan Adams song, "Oh My Sweet Valentine"

Song is here:

Three things that are stumping me.

(1) the exact fingering for the intro and verse runs. It starts on A, 1st position, and then hammers the F# on the D string, and then (I think) up to B, with the hammer on the G#. But he seems to be doing something different with the fingering that I just can't figure out.

(2) The single note run-down in each chorus line (I have those in question marks below). I know each line ends in a D chord, 1st position, but I cannot figure out how he gets there.

(3) The single note run down in the bridge, lines 3 and 4 (questions marks there too), as well as the chord in the last "Some(?)times."

Below, lyrics and interspersed chords/notes that I have made out so far.

By the way, RA never officially recorded this song. This is one of the only extant performances of it, done in 1999 at Nashville's Exit Inn. That entire concert -- well worth it -- is free at archive.org.

Intro
(A)(AHamF#)(BHamG#)(AHamF#)(A)(AHamF#)(Twice)

Verse
(A)Oh my (AHamF#)Sweet Valentine (BHamG#)
(AHamF#)Guess I knew you well (A)(AHamF#)
(A)Left my (AHamF#)old better half(BHamG#)
To (AHamF#)be all by myself(A)(AHamF#)

Though I (C#min) don't have long, I(D)know
I'll just (Dmin)let my lovin’ show

(Chorus)
'Cause there (?) ain't nothing (?)like a (?)petal in(?)a rainstorm (D)
No there(?) ain't nothing (?)like a (?)petal in (?)a rainstorm(D)
No there (?) ain't nothing (?)like a(?)petal in (?)a rainstorm (D)
Love can't (Dmin)keep you warm, my (A)dear

(A)(AHamF#)(BHamG#)(AHamF#)(A)(AHamF#)(Twice)

(Bridge)
(Dmin)And we're never far from (A)home (E-hG-A single notes)
(Dmin)That place where we all (A)go (E-hG-A single notes)
(Dmin)Now I can't wait to (?)get there (?)some(?)times (?)
Some(?)times it's such (?)fun to be alive

(A)(AHamF#)(BHamG#)(AHamF#)(A)(AHamF#)(Twice)

(Verse)

Oh my sweet serenade
Guess we tore it up
Nighttime sang our song
Until we gave it up

Though I don't have long, I know
I'll just let my lovin show

(Chorus)
'Cause there ain't nothing like a petal in a rainstorm
No, there ain't nothing like a petal in a rainstorm
No, there ain't nothing like a petal in a rainstorm
Love won't keep you warm, my dear

1. This is a basic I-IV-V form with a A bass at the bottom. Only thing you need to know what shapes you need. First basic open A, then D major chord with C shape but instead of using pinky at the 5th string 5th fret you leave the string open. Third chord is exactly the same shape (with A at the bass) but 2 frets forward (because the chord is E). Then you go back to D and if your ears work, you can figure out the rest easily. 3 different shapes here only.

So simplified: This is I-IV-V with an A at the bass. A-D/A-E/A-D/A

2. (0:48) C#m-D-Dm and then that down the line movement (Major) A-E/G#-F#m-E-D (Dm second time). At 1:30 there is that "different" chord. Just take A major chord and move all your fingers 1 fret up.

(1:46) you will have down the line major but chromatic. A-E/G#-G-F#m-Fmaj7#11 (or just plain F).

Thats the whole song. There is no single note lines actually. It is most common that all singer/songwriters compose their music using shapes and create "single note lines" around shapes.

Just try to get your ears more connected and you will get there. Couple of nice twists in this song but nothing new for people who have trained their ears to certain point.

Good luck

Both of what you guys have would be in the same key (A) as I play it, but I do it a little bit differently. I play this with a capo on the 2nd fret in G.
Just so I don't get ahead of myself, here are the chord shapes I use too. All pretty basic, but since I think some people may interpret the chords a little differently (since I'm probably not using the correct names lol) thought they should be shown.

G 3 C/G 3 Dadd4 5 D 0 C/G2 0
0 1 3 3 1
0 0 0 0 0
0 2 4 4 2
2 0 0 5 3
3 3 5 5 3

So the intro and first part of the verse are just strumming the G and hammering onto the C/G, then sliding into the Dadd4. You put up good videos and lessons, so I'm sure you can figure out the strumming pattern on this too btw Also, please note that I don't have a guitar in front of me, so I think all the chords will be correct (for my version anyway), but some places might be in slightly the wrong order. Anyway, back to song. After that the "I don't have long" part is Bm, C, and Cm

The chorus for "There ain't nothing like a petal in the rainstorm" part is G, G/F#, Em, D, C/G2 until the last line of "won't keep you warm" which is Cm and G and then back into the intro/verse riff.

Lastly, the "We're never far from home" part I play Cm and G. However, I use a barred G on the 3rd fret and hammer on the low E string from open to the G note on 3rd fret of the low E to do so. After doing that a few times, I go back into the G, G/F#, Em, etc run for the "Sometimes, it's such fun to be alive" part. I think that's pretty much it. Please feel free to ask any questions and/or feedback. If I remember, I'll check my work on my guitar when I get home.

Of course, all chord names and shapes are relative to the capo, and everything Tomi put done seemed correct to me. My ears aren't the greatest and it's the same key, so just another one to play it. Let me know if you've got any other Ryan Adams tunes you're looking for. I can't play lead for the life of me, but I've got a pretty vast repertoire of his, especially b-side stuff.

What about walking down the low-e string with a strummed A chord.
Walk down A-G#-F#-E?

Gary thanks. I will try your approach.

Do you know about my youtube channel?

http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTo5...7iVFrFg/videos

I have been methodically working through many of RA's songs.

Yeah, I've seen your page, some really good stuff on there. Actually, I think everything you've posted is how I play them. I've got a few requests for you; the banjo part on Come Pick Me Up would be cool if you know it. I've watched countless videos of that song, but nobody ever shows what Neal was doing there and it doesn't seem like anyone is playing it in his new band. There are two Whiskeytown b-side tracks I was never able to figure out like Medicine and Probably Going to Happen which sound like they're mostly acoustic driven tracks, but for the life of me can't figure them out.

Not sure, it's like 3rd fret, 2nd fret, 3rd fret, open. when looking down on the guitar starting on d string.
