The only need is one decent-sounding, playable guitar. Having more than that will neither help nor hurt learning progress.

If musicianship is your goal the more instruments early on is better to set up your learning curve .. that is why all music majors have to pass a piano bar . the piano just helps your over all musicianship even on your instrument of choice. you will think differently if you have more than one guitar . especially if you use different tuning.

He's asking about more than one guitar rather than more than one kind of instrument.
