Default A few days in New Orleans

Hi there, my son is playing a gig at House of Blues in New Orleans on Sunday the 25th.
My wife and I are heading down to catch the show and will have a few days to wander.

Any suggestions related to guitars, live music, local culture and fresh beer are welcome.
Any locals that can chime in on cool spots that may not be mainstream tourists hangouts would be awesome.
Thanks in advance...

I grew up close to there. The good thing about NOLA is live music and culture will be all around you all the time.

I ate at Mr Ed’s oyster bar near the French quarter and it was great! I also like the camellia grill for breakfast!

If you have time and it’s a nice day, ride the trolly through the city with the windows down. Completely free. The zoo is also pretty nice

Not a local but visited there last year. Some suggestions:
Frenchman Street - lots of funky clubs with local jazz
We found a cool Zydeco bar (don't mock me until you try it) on Bourbon Street
Preservation Hall in the French Quarter - touristy, but you've gotta do it

Non-musical:
WW2 Museum
Cemetery tours - we found the one where they filmed "Easy Rider"
There's a huge warehouse where they build & store the Mardi Gras floats. Tours available.

Have Fun!!

As someone who loves to visit NO my advice is simple, forget any shopping and enjoy the music is on almost every block in the quarter and the drinks that flow like water. I've never found anything other than great food or drink that I wanted to buy or shop for in New Orleans. Enjoy what they do best.

My vote is for Preservation Hall. Get there way early and stand in line and wait - unless you want the pricey seats, which you can get ahead of time. It's real Dixieland (though it has nothing to do with guitars).

When I went to New Orleans I was surprised that the majority of clubs in featured rock bands - I expected Jazz everywhere. Talk to the locals. They’ll point you to the best restaurants (there’s a great Italian restaraunt on Frenchmen Street - 2nd floor across the street from the tattoo parlor) then go down the block for the Best Jazz in the city! You can’t go to New Orleans and not go to a Zydeco bar.
