Has to be my Gibson WM-45. All the Gibson goodness of a standard J-45 at a working man's price. Purchased used about 8 years ago at a serious bargain price.

1974 Les Paul Deluxe Goldtop. Paid 400 bucks for it in 1984 and sold it 30 years later for $1800. I wanted to be buried with it, but sometimes life hands you a rough patch and you gotta pay the bills.

I recently picked up a 2002 Artist Series Spruce/Mahogany CW (no electrics). I found it in at local used musical gear place for 350 bucks. It had a ding in the side and one mismatched tuner button. I got them down to 300 and they threw in a HSC to boot. It cost me less than 100 dollars to fix the ding and get the right tuner buttons (from Godin, no less). For snicks and grins I had the luthier install an LR Baggs I-Beam passive pickup. So maybe this is my best Guitar for the Money LOL. I keep it at work.

Interesting how many people answer this question with some variation on: "What I have now."
Now, I have some stellar guitars. And since I tend to buy and hold guitars, I've long since amotized a number of them down to cents per day. But best for the money? Has to be the Philippine-made "Presidente" that I bought, used, in a hock-shop in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1976 for $49 NZ. Solid top, back and sides, made with some undisclosed wood (Philippine Mahogany?). Bolt-on neck. Roughly 000-size. Quite playable, and sounded decent... for what it was. I subsequently dragged (drugged? Drogged?) that sucker, in a cheap gigbag, all over New Zealand, then on to Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Northern India, Kashmir, Nepal and Sri Lanka over the next two years. It saw sunsets on the beach at Kuta, Hikkadua, Byron Bay, and Kata. It was played looking at the Annapurna massif by Mycologically-enhanced full moon light. Full moon at Ayers Rock. Crowd-watching in Durbar Square. Lonely hotel rooms in strange places. Full moon at the Taj Mahal (Yes, I did time being some places by the phase of the moon) On the deck of a houseboat on Nagin Lake. Desperadoes, waiting on a train. (Or Bus, or long-distance taxi) Eventually gifted to the then-head of the Indian High-Altitude Warfare School in Gulmarg, for favors rendered. (Which involved telling the guards at the checkpoint at the bottom of the mountain to flag down a supply truck for me when I showed up after skiing down the mountain in waist-deep powder) It amortizes out to around $.07 per day over the two years that I owned it. Quite the deal... Last edited by Mycroft; 02-14-2018 at 12:24 PM. Reason: Spelling |

I don't know. guitars I paid a lot for way back have given me great joy and will probably at least sell for more once my wife has successfully disposed of me.
However if she hits me over the head with one - she might make a loss on that one. Seriously - I daon't particularly look for "bargains" - I don't have an unlimited budget but I mostly buy used, with my priority of buynig the guitars that "suit" my hands and my style best. Over the years the buying cost becomes immaterial and will probably at least return the same or more when sold.

Probably my Wingert Concert Muse (00) that I bought used almost 15 years ago. It was built in 2001 and I purchased it in 2003. Cedar/East Indian, super comfortable to play, and balanced, clear tone for days.

My SCGC D-12 is the best I've ever had period. Worth every penny. If you want to figure in money spent vs quality and tone, I don't see how you can beat the Emerald X20.

This sounds crazy...but I just picked up my second all-Sapele Martin Dreadnought Jr. after selling my first one, because I can't get over what an amazing guitar it is for $500 (w/o electronics). Unbelievable.

Two come to mind:
1. The Martin OM-15 LA Guitar Sales custom -- Owned that one for 5+ years before selling to move up the food chain. Punched well above its purchase price ($1100 in 2012? Don't remember exactly), lightly built, great strummer and fingerpicker, huge sound. 2. My current 2012 SCGC D/PW, Sitka/EIR with the Adi bracing/Hide glue package, bought used for < 50% MSRP in 2016. The best guitar I've ever owned, period. Not the loudest dread in town, but no other dread has come close to the quality of tone that this guitar is capable of (and I've had some nice ones), nor the ease of playability. The added bonus is that it's 1/4" shallower than your typical Martin and Collings dread, making it super comfortable in the lap.

I always pick my 2003-ish Tacoma EF21C little jumbo. Trans red, spruce top over flamed maple body, all solid woods. Off the 'Bay, super inexpensive even with shipping and finding a used case. Just such a honey.

As far as value goes, it's really really hard to beat the $75 I paid for a brand new Jasmine S35. It isn't a particularly inspiring guitar, but it's decent - and it was $75 shipped.
Next up would be the $550 Yamaha LS16M. All solid, maple binding, etc etc. Its build quality, appointments/embellishments and tone are on par with guitars costing thousands more. |
