Silly Tonedexter Question - TD image from an internal mic?
Probably not, but I thought to ask if anyone had made a TD image by playing their guitar with an internal mic?
I have a Fishman Rare Earth Blend with the attached mic and I often use this to get a sound out of guitars I have with no pickup, or guitars I don't WANT to get a pickup - I install the lot in the soundhole and just turn the mic on and all the mag off.... Anyone? I wouldn't ask but I have seen people talking about making images with their Lyric. BluesKing777. |

well i am not quite clear on what you mean.
are you using the internal mic as your mic input to the TD or you pickup input? if pickup then do you have an external mic as well to build the wavemap? Last edited by varmonter; 01-28-2018 at 05:32 PM. |

Thanks.
My fault for not being clear - I have a Neumann KM184 as well to make the image, but I was thinking of using the internal mic instead of a pickup... ( a couple of nice guitars I have don’t have pickups. BluesKing777. |

I'd be surprised if the sound you got from the "internal" mic would be anything like a proper mic mounted in front of the guitar. If you like the sound of this mic by itself and wanted to make a built in pickup sound like it then give it a try.

be it couldnt hurt to try it. The whole point of the Td is to use the guitars electronics that you gig with. so if you build a wavemap with just the mic side of the fishman. it may sound different when you add the pup side back in later at a gig. But nothing ventured nothing gained. I know for me headphones did not cut it. i set up my pa in the house and built the wavemaps ...then played them back through the speaker.. got better results that way. more keepers if you will. James May has NOT recommended using mag pups to build wavemaps . i have built some with a kk and got good results live using a sunrise mag pup through the kk wavemap. So you may find your rare earth works just fine afterwards. The 184 is a great mic. I've tried an at4040 a mxl 603s and a shure sm81 ..the sm81 yielded the best results . these are not in the same league as the km184. Last edited by varmonter; 01-29-2018 at 08:36 AM. |

You could indeed use an internal mic as the pickup source, but the anecdotal evidence (to this point) has been that you'll get better results with a soundboard pickup or undersaddle pickup. Its my understanding that one of the ToneDexter beta testers switched pickups from a Lyric system to a K&K Pure Mini for that very reason. One or two additional ToneDexter users (buzzardwhiskey for one) have also made that same pickup switch.

Thanks!
I don’t have the Tonedexter yet - it must have been first on the plane and LAST out! Tracking is useless, what about a definite time of delivery! Waiting, waiting. I have guitars with undersaddles to use the TD with, don’t worry about that! Looking forward to it. But I do have some guitars that I don’t want to alter with pickups, so I ‘place’ my Fishman Rare Earth Blend in their soundhole and mainly use the little internal condenser mic that is attached to the REB, for those that don’t know what I am talking about. Sometimes, I blend in just a touch of mag pickup to get rid of the hollow internal mic sound, depends on the guitar.....it can sound boxy in a small guitar, but great in a larger body. So after I sorted the guitars with undersaddles and TD, I will try making a file or 2 with the REB. If the Lyric sort of works, I can’t see why this won’t. BluesKing777. |
