If you don't mind some sloppy finishing, many still sound and play pretty well indeed. I've tried to find one I like enough to buy to accompany my 1969 B45-12, but have never quite taken the plunge despite having been close.
I went for the TDM based on the experience of becoming the recent owner of a maple H&D - if mine is indicative of the maker, I don't think any modern Gibson could easily compete with a H&D. That said, I'm with Frozen Rat: you need to spend some quality time with each. If you can't play them alongside each other, record both playing a variety of styles and listen back later. Not a fan of Gibson Jumbos but I do like a GiIbson dred. No experience with H&D but from reading through this thread I think I should try to find one to try (although I could not afford to buy one).
Not sure I like the sound of the H&D name though. TD-M sounds like tedium. |

My previous post may have been misleading. I like Gibsons a lot, in fact I currently own a J-35 that reminds me of a short scale mahogany AJ. But given the choice of an AJ or H&D mahogany SS, there would be no contest.

You compare Mahogany to Rosewood back and sides. You need to play both to decide on the back and sides you prefer. Lot's of Bluegrass guys like Mahogany over Rosewood. But that's personal taste, I need both
I was a huge Martin fan for decades, till I played my AJ. I sold all my Martin D's just kept my 000-18A. My AJ is one of these 2013 Ltd. Edition 1935 AJ, built like the Martin Authentic. A copy of one particular 1935 AJ, built with hide glue etc. It has a good size neck but the shape makes it effortless to play. It's my favorite acoustic guitar since. Due to this experience I also purchased one of these 2013 Ltd edition 1934 Original Jumbo, which has Mahogany back and sides. They are both outstanding instruments.

If you want a Gibson sound buy a Gibson. H&D don't sound like Gibsons.

Same here. Although I would go for tone over playability all day.
I can get used to anything.

I have never owned, or played, anything by Huss and Dalton. I have, however, owned an Advanced Jumbo and I would unhesitatingly recommend one. It is quite simply Gibson's finest acoustic offering.

It depends... who's buying?
I sure know which one would be easier to sell. |

I chose the Huss & Dalton because I prefer mahogany. If the Gibson had been a J-45, I would have chosen that one.
