Newtone National/Michael Messer roundwound strings, the best I've found for resonator guitars.
Usually a set with a 15 for the top E string, seems to work best for me as I play in standard and in open D and open G. My preference is Monel or nickel over phosphor bronze. https://newtonestrings.com/product-c...v=11aedd0e4327

I have Ghs Pure Nickel Roller wound 16-56 on my reso square neck at the moment. They seem to be just fine.

Dobro sounds great, Robin! What model is it, and were you plugged in? I've never played dobro in a band with drums before.

I wasn't plugged in. We just set-up a single stage mic' to cover 3 of us singing and playing. I played guitar, dobro, banjo and blues harp (none plugged in) and sang. Nick played his Gibson L-00 and mandolin (neither plugged in) and sang. Ella did backing vocals. Then we had Giles on lead guitar, Rowan on bass guitar and Chris on drums. The balance worked out fine for the night just using an lcd stage mic' for the 3 of us (Rode NT1a). Here's another song from the gig.

Really? I think of resonator guitars as guitars.
But I do wish AGF had a resonator forum. I mean, if there's room for a harp guitar forum and a carbon fiber forum . . . . |

I string my National Resolectric with D'Addario Custom Lights (.052-.023) on the wound strings, but .016 & .012 on the plains, generally tuned down to what I call C'Vestapol, or open D down a half step. I play bottleneck and fingerstyle on it. HE

Ok I tried some D'Addario Flattop 12's on my National NRP Tri Cone but have decided to go back to Flatwound XL's. The Flattop's were good but still a bit raspy IMO. YMMV

A lot of players seem to be recommending heavier B and high E strings. I might try it. Not sure what the advantage is. It might just be that since open-tuning slide doesn't call for much bending, they don't care less about flexibility and more about loudness. Of course, my Dobro isn't an electric guitar. Those Resolectrics are way cool, but maybe I should go for more weight on the unwound strings. Last edited by Charlie Bernstein; 03-09-2024 at 05:31 PM. |
