Send an email to John or Pono. They should be able to direct you.

The Ponos are just eye and ear candy to me. There are so many beautiful guitars in this thread!

I can only say that John Kitakis, who owns Pono Guitars, is a Gibson fan. That information came from a telephone conversation with him a while back.
My SS Dread has some similarities in tone but it doesn't quite have the growl of a J45. It has a "sweeter" more melodic voice and quite a bit of sustain for a mahogany back and sides. I suspect it's the bracing and lighter build.
I think an Eastman E 10 SS would be closer to a J45 from what I have heard in comparisons. One thing is for certain, the build quality for the price is superb.
I decided to post a better pic of mine:

My OO-20 sure looks like the little brother of your DS-20.

I definitely second the comment about the voice and sustain. I keep thinking that there's no way a short-scale mahogany OO should have that much sustain, possibly more than even my EIR OM.

Likewise on the Dread. I just played it and for all the world it sustains like Rosewood...or dang close.

I'm a big fan, I've been shaving off a few guitars as a pick my favorites, but think very highly of them.
