I feel there is a great guitar at every price point. As I sample guitars in this day and age, I find that it's easier to find a good guitar in the $300 range than it is to find a good guitar in the $1000 range.
But, I can never find the Larrivee's....

Good point. I stick with authentic's for much less than genuine pre-war models.

Many years ago (in the eighties somewhere) I was always impressed with how good Wasburns sounded, both acoustics and electrics, and most of them were dirt cheap. I have no clue about their current status, but they were a seriously good value at one time.

In a blind test I picked Pepsi but realized shortly after that I really do prefer Coke. Guitars can sound good alone sometimes but as soon as you compare them directly some aspects of their sound becomes evident and educate your ear.

Here's the thing: I'm married. My wife has been understanding. But I promise you that there has been no time since my wedding day -- not one second -- when there's been any such thing as a budget guitar equivalent that "no one wants [me] to know about." There's always been that special someone. |

To add something that addresses the OP. I think Martin Guitars with the mortise & tenon neck - 15 and 16 series - are just as good as the dovetail ones. I own a D21 Special and a CEO-7. I love those guitars, but I'd keep my little 00C-16DBRE before either of those. But it's a subjective, personal preference that is probably colored by the journey I have taken with that guitar. I don't need to convince anyone else that I'm right. It's just me. I don't get offended when almost everyone else who plays my guitars disagrees. |

Are you saying that you had to learn to like the sound of your guitar? I'm sorry but I respectfully disagree, whether it's 400$ or 4000$ I know the sound I like the instant I hear it, and that doesn't change for me by education.

For the longest I wanted that fast decay sound for playing the blues and now I have a good one for that, my J-45. Currently I'm playing a lot of DADGAD stuff that requires good tone and sustain (some inexpensive guitars fail there btw) and my thirst for resonance, responsiveness and sustain is increasing. So this thread is about substitutes, if any, for the players on an under $1,000 budget for example. Can't afford a J-45? What's a decent "stand in"? Can't afford a D-28? What are good substitutes? This is what the intent of the thread is about. I don't know what some members were crying about,

The sampling part is true, but there are plenty of great $1000 guitars...plenty.

Just surprising to see it started by a guy who owns both a Gibson J-45 and a Guild D-55! |

You're correct, there is NO harm in discussing lower end guitars. But titling the thread with an obvious click bait is where the trouble starts.

The $300 guitar is like the $6 bottle of wine. You're expecting little so if it doesn't totally suck, it's a win. We have a line in the wine business...."It's six bucks and nobody died"
