Default Bend on Finger 3

As you may remember me mentioning before, I am teaching a coworker to play. His fingers are the size of mine (big) and he has major difficulty with his A/ A shaped Barre. :

I--0----
I--3----
I--3----
I--3----
I--0----
I--X----

or

I--1----
I--3----
I--3----
I--3----
I--1----
I--X----

He just can't get the end of that third finger to come up to the angle necessary to not mute the high e. My finger seems to do it naturally. Will this change with practice or does he need a wider fingerboard? I'm scared to tell him to stretch it in fear he'll break it.

Thanks in advance.

to me those are the kind of small things that bother you when you are starting but you just have to live with. As he progresses he will be able to bend the finger, I don't see any harm in telling him to stretch out his fingers before he tries to play that position. it's 1 note out of 5, that will serve him fine. Practice, practice, practice! =) You're doing a good thing by teaching him, it's not easy to do and you've got to be patient.

Default this is just a suggestion

but whenever he messes up just smack him on the back of the head. do this until he gets the A formation and A barre chord down. he may not initially like you doing that, especially the first time you wack him on the head. surprise shock and curse words may ensue, but it will help him progress faster and in the end i believe he will come around to appreciate the abuse. this is from the zen buddhist guitar teaching handbook that has been tested for generations. handed down from zen guitar master to zen guitar student for generations. yes, monks play guitar too!

just kidding, give him time. the finger dexterity will come around

ummm...maybe he needs to do what I do, and that's make a 2 finger chord out of A. I just can't find room for all three fingers on there. Just a thought..
