Default Shelf-life of strings

I wouldn't think that strings, even Elixirs, would degrade in any significant way. Unless they're stored in the sunlight, or in a too hot/cold environment. So therefore, it would be safe to buy a 2- or 3-year supply of them, if you get a deal.

Agree? Disagree?

Strings, being metal, will oxydize over time (i.e. corrode). Some are sealed pretty well, but other packs just let the air right in there. Unless you have some way to keep them hermetically sealed in a mayonaisse jar on Funk and Wagnalls porch, I wouldn't buy more that a few months supply at a time.

if i was going to buy a bunch of strings, it would be daddarios, just cause they have that "corrosion resistant packaging" and i bet the strings will last longer that way....

I recently ordered a few sets of Newtone strings because I had heard good things about them. When I opened up the package the wound strings were tarnished as if they had been on the shelf a long time. The B and E unwound strings weren't rusty but they felt a little sticky; not slick when I played them. I don't know if I like them or not. They didn't sound bad but they didn't feel right when I played them. I believe they were on the shelf longer than they should have; maybe in a poorly controlled climate. I went back to my Elixers and I think I'll stay with them. I wanted to try something different just out of curiosity, but every time I do this I'm disappointed. Oh well.
