For now here are some quick impressions:

- First thing I noticed was it seems to weigh more than my D-18. Nothing major, but noticeable. Still, it was plenty lively and responsive, particularly with those lush rosewood overtones. Much different sound than the woody and warm hog 18.

- Next thing that struck me was how gorgeous it is. Just stunning. I'm not a fan of the aged tops, but even that looks okay on this beauty...or maybe I'm just getting used to it since it also came on my D-18. The open back tuners and new pick guard are sweet. ...
Congrats Rev! Glad you're pleased so far.

Not preferring "aged" looking tops? Until this last year all my guitars were "naturally aged" so I had no comparison. This years I got not one but two Taylors. And I'll tell you, compared to my Martin and Yairis, my 814 looks like a pasty faced white guy heading to the beach for the first time in mid August. Now THAT'S hard to get used to. Just looks "too new" .

As far as sound goes, Martin is looking to brighten up the higher overtones on many of their models, somewhat in the shadow of Taylor who seems to have shifted the paradigm of modern acoustic guitar sound. I'll be curious to play a new D28 and compare it to their latter day HD28 to see how much difference there is between these two similar models.

Are there any other Martin models that come with 1 3/4" nuts?

I must be missing something, but I don't understand these posts about Martin modeling their sound after Taylor guitars. All they did was move the bracing forward.

It's not like Taylor redesigned the guitar to sound like a Taylor.

Yep, have to admit the first strum on this beauty brought Taylor to mind. A bit brighter than I was expecting, but in a good way with those lush rosewood overtones. But then it may just be that my ears are so accustom to hog right now (I’ve been playing the D-18 exclusively for the last few months) that any rosewood guitar would seem bright.

As for 1 3/4” nuts...since Martin updated the D-18 in 2012 with one it's done the same thing to a variety of guitars including the OM-28, 000-18 and now the D-28.

That brightness might be related to a brand new stiff top in combination with straight braces. My D-18 took around a week to mellow out somewhat. I'm not saying my D-18 "opened up" within two weeks, but it definitely sounded stiff the first few days of play.

The Martin website will give specs for all their production models string spacing at the nut. There are however several AFG sponsors who have custom shop Martin's built for their shops with wider string spacing on different models that are production Martin models. Mostly with particular upgrades that would suit their clientele I suppose?

I agree... stark white spruce tops just don't look right to me. Martin used a mild tinting toner on my OM28-Vintage and I just love the look of the top - right from day one. The tint, tight grain structure, along with intense silking across the grain, looks pretty cool to me. I'm all for mild tinting of the tops.

Whoa! Studio quality guitar porn. Nice. But I'm only partially sold. Still kinda looks like the guitar got a spray tan to me. But I’m coming around. Fortunately, tone trumps looks to me...so it’s largely a nonissue.

Yes, of course, great tone is a requirement. It wouldn't make any sense to buy a guitar for it's looks alone. Fortunately, the tone and the looks are there with this one!

It's definitely a looker....so sweet!!!!

And I don't mind spray tan. As long as the final product isn't overdone and looks good.

I placed my E 20 D Addy Top in front of bright indirect sunlight for two months and it took the white away. Looked real purty.
