I agree that it’s most likely highly associated with the population of each state. I think the more interesting question might be which state has the most guitar player per capital. If that becomes the question, I’d be willing to bet that Tennessee might rank #1, and that southern states, in general might have a slightly higher number per capital. That’s based on nothing but pure speculation and stereotypes.

A better question might be which state has the best guitar players. That would likely be Tennessee as the convenience store clerks would be guitar gods anywhere else.

When I was in the navy a Californian commented he knew why we all played guitar in TN "because it gave us something to do while sitting under the shade tree drinking sweet tea". I had to agree.

I guess if guitar collections counted, the answer could be Connecticut. I read where Keith Richards has one of the largest guitar collections in the world. That doesn't mean they have the most players though.

It's really pretty easy to take a census. Just tally the number of pizza delivery drivers in each state.

California, just by virtue or population density and "West Coast Hipness"! Certainly there are a lot of guitarists in Nashville, but the question was "state", not "city"...

Of course, "it's custom made for every mother's son to be a guitar picker in Nashville.... and I sure am glad I had a chance to say a word about the mothers and the music in Nashville..."!!!

TRUE! Last time I was in Nashville, a little boy and his dad wandered into GC. I mean, the child was maybe 9. He picked up a banjo and ripped up the joint. His dad just calmly was looking at cases.

After the child finished, no one even blinked. I thanked him and he shrugged.

His dad got a used guitar case and off they went. As did I with my tail between my legs.

Kent Dykes(Omar and the Howlers) told about everyone saying he was such a great singer and player, he should go to Austin where he would get the attention he deserved.

He finally decided to go and, when he stopped for gas just outside of town, the attendant asked about his guitar case in the back seat. Kent took it out and handed it to the guy to look at who then proceeded to wail out some of the best blues guitar Dykes had ever heard. He thought if this guy is pumping gas, this whole breaking out in Austin plan may be a little tougher than anticipated.
