Of the 50 instruments I own, 5 are 12 strings guitars so in my case it's 10%. Overall I would imagine it's less than 1%. If money was no object I'd buy a dozen more.

Currently 25% of my guitar inventory.

12-strings once were 100% as it was the only guitar I had for the longest time. I learned how to play guitar on it.

I find that any good 12 string will stay in tune as well as any good 6 string. I try to keep a 12 for each 6 in my house (balancing the Yin and the Yang). OOPS, I seem to be one 12 string short at the moment; anyone got a nice Goodall 12 for sale, cheap??

This simply is not true anymore. I own 4 12-string guitars and 3 6-strings. Mechanical tuners have greatly improved and good guitars don`t seem to go wildly out of tune every 2nd day and used together with a small battery powered tuner makes tuning a 12-string a breeze.

I don't think they are that common, there are only 5 in my household.

Smile I love 12 strings!

I've loved 12-strings ever since I heard Fred Gerlach playing Leadbelly songs at Coffee House Positano in Malibu way back in 1959. Before that occasion I didn't know they existed. When fingerpicked, they are sort of like a portable piano. I currently own two, one acoustic and one electric.

There have been a couple of periods in my musical life (both about 2 years) during which I played nothing else.

These days they seem to be the most popular amongst Christian guitarists who play in church.

Yup ... when I tried to sell my 2012 Taylor GA3-12 to GC, they offered me 28% of MSRP. I found a buyer on CL who wanted it a little more and paid me $745 ... still well below the 50% of MSRP that I felt was reasonable to expect.

For every 12 string in existence, there are how many 6 strings?
I don't know if a survey has ever been taken about the ratio of 12-string guitars to 6-string guitars, but I do know that of all my guitar playing friends (and I know quite a few of them), only 3 of us (myself included) play 12-string guitars almost exclusively.

I play my 12 string off and on, and whenever I get back to it, I appreciate it. The only 12 I kept and use now is a JM 16 12 Tacoma Jumbo. It has awesome sound. Sometimes, I make it an eight or 9 string by eliminating a string at the low and high E strings and the G and B strings to make it an 8 and sometimes will leave the double B strings and make it a 9. It is a big full sound on that big Tacoma jumbo. I usually tune down a full note also.
